p.1 #1 · Need to buy new batteries for the R5/R6 to use at full capacity!!!
Today, I attended a Mike's Camera workshop about R5 and R6 features. A Canon representative presented, so all facts would be legit, I would assume. There were a few things I heard that I did not like. The first was the battery situation. It is now well known that Canon has released battery life estimates, which are as low as 180-220 shots shooting RAWs in the R5. The presenter mentioned that when using LP-E6N batteries, in the R5/R6 the FPS will be limited to 9 FPS. And when using the LP-E6 batteries or a weaker LP-E6N, only 3 FPS. Those limitations are mainly in mechanical mode. The issue with E-shutter is that I always shoot uncompressed RAW, and the rep confirmed that the R5/R6 CANNOT shoot uncompressed RAW files in E-shutter. Just throwing that out there in case anybody is in the same boat as I am: Coming from the 5D series and having plenty of LP-E6/6N batteries left over and planning to use them when shooting action, sports, wildlife, or anything that needs a high frame rate. You will have to budget for at least 4 batteries I am guessing, which is an extra $300 or so.

Can the camera shoot 12fps mechanical with just one battery or do you need a battery grip?
It will be able to shoot 12 FPS mechanical with one battery, but only the new LP-E6NH battery that costs $75. If you use any other battery, the frame rate will drop. They mentioned that if you use the old batteries in the grip, the frame rate will still drop.

That's cool, I don't blame them for charging $75 per battery. That's better than needing to have the battery grip installed to the full performance.

You need to start documenting a list of them in one place...figure it out so I can check from time to time as things develop.
I'm curious why they don't have 120fps in 1080p?? This one is mind boggling for now, hopefully they add it soon.
Not sure there! But I am not even getting into the video limitations. Their 8K mode can only go for 20 minutes before the camera overheats. Then you have to wait a long time before you can use it again. 4K mode is limited as well. Video is not something I care about, so I don't care. But it is a bit alarming to hear that Canon admits their camera will easily overheat on one many people wanted to use for the sole purpose of video. Mind you, that is at about 70 degrees Fahrenheit, so you can infer what I am thinking. Hint: Outside.

Guys shooting polar bears will be stoked. They have built in hand warmers now.
I imagine it's not going to do well in my water housing with all that heat.

Canon RAWs are always compressed. The CR3 format introduced the option for lossy compression, the C-RAW. Maybe the presenter used to work for Sony or Nikon and meant to say that only C-RAW is allowed at 20 FPS e-shutter?
The EVF is a power hog, but I suspect the total frames will be several times higher than the CIPA 320 EVF/490 rear screen. CIPA takes single shots and waits about 30 seconds. Batteries will suck when waiting an hour for something to happen for wildlife, but the R5 is first and foremost a video camera. I'm sure there will be some occasionally overheating/exploding cheaper batteries on the eBAY.

Yep, not to mention being in the Arctic now has an advantage for R5 shooters.
Wait, did you say water housing, or oven? Put some cookie dough in while you are at it?
Yeah, I guess a nice warm cookie wouldn't hurt after a long swim...good idea.
All joking aside I'm like you with shooting a 5D4 or 1DXII and not having to worry about a battery all day. It will be interesting to see how the R5 battery fares with shooting stills. If it requires a few battery changes then I'm not interested. Bring on a 5DV please!

All I know is that I am not second guessing buying my 1DX Mark III anymore! I will buy the R5 anyway, because I need a higher megapixel body. I also do like what I see with the RF mount lenses. I am just absolutely not buying an R6 like I planned to do.

My LP-E6N batteries are getting old now, still 2 stars, but I would just sell them with my existing bodies and get new ones. The cost of a R5 plus CF express cards will run close to 5K, so what's another 250 for batteries?

And for those wanting to play with 8K, a little extra for their computer.
I just shoot photos so a bit more moderate when I choose an R5 or R6

I'm seriously amazed that one would forego the obvious advantages of AF just so that you don't have to change batteries. But to each their own, as they say.
As for the reduced frame rate: I've been shooting my 1DX2 with my old 1Ds3 batteries and oh my the shutter was slowed down from 14 to 12, not sure the number of times I missed it. So if I have to feed the R5 my old batteries if in a pinch, I am sure I can stomach the reduced frame rate, and that probably holds true for most other people as well.
As for "only compressed raw possible in E-shutter" - all Canon raws have been compressed, always. So that's good. And if he's referring to CRAW, then that's fine too. It's objectively hard to measure the difference on the R, and I have been using Sony's equivalent for the better part of a year now on the a7r4 and I really can't tell much of a difference either. So I think we'll be fine.
