p.77 #1 · Sony-shooters thoughts on the Canon R5/R6

Now that few experienced Sony shooters have tried the R5, what's the conclusion? Is anyone completely switching to Canon from Sony?

Too early to tell. You'll know the thread is reaching completion when all that's left to affirm Canon's superiority is:

- Canon colors
- Canon menus
- pinky rest

That's how all Canon vs BrandX threads end for a decade now. Ask the Nikon guys.

Some hard hitting questions posed to Canon in here about the overheating, the "hacks" to get around them, possible firmware improvements, etc.

The story from Canon is still that the R5 is "working as intended". Interesting read.

What I like about this thread is that members of the Sony forum here on FM are expressing lots of differing opinions, choosing to switch systems, add to their existing system, or make no changes based on how they view the features of the R5. This without the bashing, and brand anger, and personal attacks we see on some other gear forums here on FM.

Most Sony users here seem to acknowledge to amazing advancements that Canon has made with the release of the R5/R6 cameras without feel threatened by the. The Canon users, and potential switchers, are able to acknowledges some of the issues in these new cameras without angry defense.

Well done Sony forum participants.

Yes, apparently we are all civilized adults here and we respect other’s opinions regardless whether we agree with them or not. Peace!

Thom Hogan said it a short time back and I have to fully agree:
If you are invested in Nikon or Sony or Canon, there is no imminent need to switch systems at all, as all will provide fantastic bodies and lenses to provide photographers with the tools to produce great work. Many obsess over tiny differences instead of looking into what improves your photography much more: creativity, light, composition, practice.
There will alway be a tiny fraction of enthusiasts wanting (sometimes indeed need) the newest and shiniest and if they are happy and have the money, they should go for it and drive the market demand further.

I always wonder, though, about what people do with the Million of world class landscape, portrait and BIF images, which people have stored on their HDs or printed to bill-board size at home ... ;-)

The overwhelming majority of Sony shooters who are trying the R5 right now seem to be saying..."I really wish my Sony 200-600 worked on RF"

Sony has a killer lens selection right now and there's very little reason to move away from it if you're happy.

A specific niche (not majority, imo, as landscapers, wedding and portrait shooters might have a different view. For *me* the A9ii is the ideal camera. Being able to use ES even indoors with artificial light is a fantastic asset at weddings. If we wouldn't make money from it, I would not care, though) can likely make good use to the camera. But what would be more interesting to me would be how many more keepers you have in the end with BIF? What do you do with those? Be happy with them on your HD? Sell them? Just feel happy to achieve a new goal?

I don't think that I'm switching completely as I have a fair bit invested in Sony including an A7RIV, A9II, and several lenses. I have an A7SIII on pre-order and the A7C looks intriguing (leaked pic below). I'm a Sony fanboy but I will use whatever brand/model/etc. performs the best for my needs. I've previously used some Canon Rebels way back and owned the Sony A6000, A6300, RX100IV, A7II, A7RII, A7RIII, A7RIV, and A9II as well as some Olympus cameras and still own a Panasonic GH5.

I received my R5 on day one and it has been a pleasure to use

Similar to you, I shoot a lot buildings and find the R5 IS functioning would be a feature that I could really use for hand held work. I can get pretty good results with Sony using 1/30 sec. with 17mm to 50mm lenses, but if I could get down to 1/8 sec with the R5, it would keep my ISO down in the low range for best results in sharpness and noise.

A minor note: I still prefer the Canon and Nikon lens release button on the left side of the body, compared to Sony's right side. I find it easiest (being right-handed) to hold the lens in my right hand and the body/release with my left. Sony has much less clearance for fingers too. I've never dropped a lens, but I've come close several times with Sony dismounting.

Exactly. Many here feel the photography world revolves around BIF photography whereas in reality that is a very small niche. Landscape, family, travel, portraits, events all have way more photographers than BIF, and all have different lenses they could not live without.

You haven't read enough birding lens threads on FM if you don't realize how irrational BIF shooters are

I have a friend who picked up the R6, I went out a couple times to help with set up and general curiosity...

Adapted L lenses AF was fast and perky, menus are very similar to Sony imho, Touchscreen (oh yeah thats how a touch screen is supposed to work!). but by far the single most impressive feature was Low Light High ISO....this R6 is Blackhole...12,800 iso looked like 100 iso..bright, clean, and almost no color noise. Outstanding.

Did you compare high iso RAW files? Canon does a LOT of cleaning (which can also add visible artifacts) on their JPGs. I was thinking how clean the ISO was looking comparing JPGs to my A7R IV until I compared RAW vs RAW.

I was actually thinking that I wish I had flawless adaptation (like I do on the R5) of the 300/2.8, 400DOII, 500/4II, 200-400/1.4 and 800L onto my Sony cameras

I just format the cards on the way home and get ready for the next morning's adventure. Looking at photos and processing photos is not why I do this. I just like taking them...then I delete them all.

Maybe a little like ISO 100 on a very old DSLR with an outdated sensor. But not against a modern sensor, when viewed on a good monitor at 100%. I am thinking you are not used to seeing what modern cameras with good electronic view finders and LCD screens, and lots of noise processing on jpegs look like.

R5 compared to a Nikon D700 which is what the poster making the claim is used to shooting according to his profile.

Big difference.

I don't know why the link doesn't work, but if you copy and paste the URL into your browser address it will.

I've set both "Release shutter w/o lens" and "Release shutter w/o card" to Enabled. Saved me a lot of money on lenses and cards, so now I can have multiple bodies to enjoy.

Similar to the Canon forum, where many Sony shooters are interjecting good info, but in multiple threads.

For an extra feature, here's Sony shooter Rockwell's next video, a tutorial on the Canon R5. At 10 minutes, it's about 1/2 the length of his first one on the R5.
