p.1 #1 · Lucinda Williams

Continuing on the quest finding looked over images from past shoots. These are images of singer/songwriter Lucinda Williams that I shot in the mid 1990's for a CD cover that never came out. These are all shot on 35mm film and three of the four are on Kodachrome 200, which was an interesting film in its day - fairly grainy but still quite sharp and a film that had a really wonderful palette. And one was shot on Agfa 1000 - a very grainy, somewhat desaturated and not so sharp emulsion. I worked with Lucinda a few times back then and was in the studio - Mad Dog Studios - in Venice, Ca. when she recorded the Car Wheels record. Love her music and writing and try to sing Red Sun Blues at least once a night.

Love your images Peter! She has that classic female face(and some males with the hair) of the times! I call it the British look!
Just something about film. Akin to vinyl v. cd's...Great work!!

Thanks Ron and Dan. I had kinda forgotten that I used to shoot a fair amount of the Kodachrome back then and I had also forgotten how really nice that film was. I used to shoot a lot of the Agfa 1000 on many shoots to have a completely different alternative option as well. Sadly, neither of those films exist anymore. I probably have a few rolls of each left in the fridge. I guess I could still shoot the Agfa and get it processed.

Terrific portraits of one of my favorite singers of that time and into the early 2000s. I saw her at a small club in Philly during her Passionate Kisses tour. One of the best shows I have seen. So intense. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is a classic. I am not into her music today as much as I was though I saw a local (now moved to Nashville) singer at a near deserted club who covered one of her songs and I have followed her ever since. Any current singer who knows Lucinda's catalog is OK by me. Thanks for sharing!

Lucinda can be an acquired taste and I was probably more into her twenty-five years ago as well, but her songs hold up really well over time. I've been revisiting a lot of her music lately and am liking it more and more again. And she has a pretty interesting Tiny Desk Concert from NPR not too long ago. I like idea of newer musicians carrying on the legacy of their mentors, not unlike Todd Snider doing the same with Jerry Jeff Walker - to the point where Jerry Jeff calls him up when he can't remember lyrics. And while I never shot JJW, I've been listening a lot to his earlier records, which are really quite amazing. Rodeo Cowboy and Fromholz's Man With the Big Hat are two faves I'm working on

bcguy - thank you. I keep finding things and am surprised that some of them are better than I remember. I'll try and get to more every week but sometimes the motivation is hard during these times. We're going to get up and running with audio recording equipment this week that I bought last year. Gee is getting requests to record parts remotely so that's the task for this week.

Sittin' in the kitchen, a house in Macon
Loretta's singing on the radio
Smell of coffee, eggs and bacon
Car wheels on a gravel road

Macon, my home town!

These are great Peter. The Agfa and Kodachrome 200 sure have an interesting look. How was she to work with? I know she's had some demons.

I haven't processed them yet, but I took a few experimental photos the other night at ISO 12500 to approximate the look of Tri-X pushed to 800. Boy things have changed. I also just watched 1917. They shot it with a new Arri camera and some of the night scenes were shot at ISO 1600!

Thanks Doug. Looking at these makes me wish we still had those films but times have changed just as Zimmerman said. Those ARRI cameras are pretty amazing. For a while I was watching a lot of those British, Aussie, and New Zealand PBS dramas like Shetland and they were all shot on the ARRI Alexa. Phenomenal dynamic range and it got to be you could just tell what camera they used from the look. The ARRI seems to be the most used but the Sony version is right up there too.

These are wonderful Peter. Lucinda is one of my favorite singer songwriters and has been for a very long time. How many can write a song about love addiction and stalking and not have it become silly? Patsy Cline sang one about stalking.

Shetland fan here to. I never shot Agfa 1000 but I did shoot a fair amount of Kodachrome 200. Again, terrific images. Thanks for sharing these.

Amazing portraits. I love the tones on all of these, especially the Agfa 1000. Any recollection of the lens used on that Agfa shot?

These shots of Lucinda were shot with a Nikon and either a 105mm 2.5 or the 180mm 2.8 ED. Yeah. Agfa 1000 was a pretty special film. Not for everything but great when is suited your needs.
