Does anyone know for certain: 300mm Non-IS f/2.8 lens hood, discontinued. ET-118 is no longer made. After some searching and B&H.

Canon ET-120W II Lens Hood for EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II
Canon ET-120B Lens Hood for EF 200mm f/2L IS Lens (B is for black)

But more searching, old message elsewhere, someone says, the ET-120 will fit. Gotta love the internet, who knows if this is true. I wish I had the specs for the end of the lenses and I could compare.

So here's the simple question, after all of that. Is the ET-120 the same diameter as the ET-118, or not?

Can someone with a 300mm L F/2.8 Non-IS measure the ET-118? The ET-120 fits either a 300mm or the 200mm in the Subject.

What's behind all of this is, I find the 300mm L lenses used, many times, no case or hood or cap or anything else. I don't need IS, and I don't want a perfect lens, so I can ding it up. I'm cautious but sometimes, just climbing up and down stairs, reaching through fences, and hiking, something could happen.

Thanks for anyone who knows the actual measurements or could contribute them for the real answer?

I did find an alternative, which I didn't know about until today. Aquatech soft hood. Could be pretty simple and done. But never give up on a quest for information?

Hood on the 200mm f/1.8 is a ET-123 by the way.
400mm and 600mm is ET-155

I own and love a 300 f/2.8 non-IS I bought new back in 1993. Measuring as closely as I can, my ET-118 is 128mm inside diameter, 135mm outside diameter, 138mm long. It has five flanges inside the hood that attach to the lens itself.

I don't know the dimensions of the other lens hoods. Good luck!

Here are some pictures and dimensions for you.

The ET-118 was for the Original 300mm F2.8 L USM Lens. I have seen two different versions of these marked ET-118, and a third type marked ET-118 II.

The ET-120 was for the first version of the Image Stabilized 300mm F2.8 IS L USM.

The ET-120 (WII) was for later versions of the Image Stabilized 300mm F2.8 IS L USM.

As far as I can tell the dimensions of the ET-120 and the ET-120 (WII) are the same. The mounting lip on the ET-120 is aluminum and the mounting lip on the ET-120 (WII) is plastic. The thumb screw design changed also.

The ET-120 and ET-120(WII) will fit on the older (first version no IS) of the 300mm F2.8. They will be slightly loose (They can be rotated even when the thumb screw is tightened all the way). They will stay in place.

The ET-118 is too small to fit on the newer 300mm F2.8 IS lenses.

The inside diameter of the ET-118 is about 5.08 inches at the top of the hood. The length measured from end to end is about 5.47 inches. When mounted on the lens it extends 4.57 inches from the front most lip of the lens.

The ET-120 dimensions are 5.32 inches Diameter and end to end length 5.70 inches. When mounted on a 300m F2.8 IS lens it extends 4.83 inches from the front most lip of the lens.

Here are some pictures.

Funny, my ET-120 hood doesn't look like any of these and resembles ET-120 (WII) model the most. It doesn't have any visible outside white screws around its diameter.

That's why I posted pictures. :-)

I'm guessing the internal mounting lip on your ET-120 is made out of plastic? And the Thumb Screw is probably painted the same color as the hood, not silver.

I don't have it on hand right now as I'm in our office, but the thumbscrew is made of metal and the mounting lip I'm quite sure shows carbon fiber.

Interesting. Sounds different from mine.

Here's a picture of the black plastic injection molded mounting lip on the ET-120(WII). You can see the round marks from the injection mold ejector pins.

And a picture of the black anodized aluminum mounting lip on the ET-120.

I'll take a look at it when I get back home and will let you know.

Ok, so there was a little bit of confusion about what the "mounting lip" means. I thought that was the entire "thing" running around the diameter of the hood that fits into the recess on the lens. Here is a cellphone photo how mine looks like:
https://milanhutera.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/20200312_180330-s2.jpg

and this is how "nameplate" of the hood looks like. Note that there are no white screws anywhere around. The hood is still in pristine condition, except the dent visible on the photo I caused when the hood fell off the lens onto a concrete

That looks to me like the whole hood is one piece of injection molded plastic except for the thumb screw mechanism.

Looks like Canon doesn't use different part numbers for hoods that have different manufacturing techniques as long as the function and dimensions of the hoods stay the same.

Though, this really brings into question why they have the ET-120 and ET-120 (WII) part numbers.

Maybe there's some optical performance difference between the ET-120 and the ET-120 (WII) that I'm not aware of. /s

Amazing collection and wonderful details. I don't know where the lens hoods go, but I keep seeing the old lenses for sale, without them. Maybe they are sold as parts to get better value. At least now I know that the wrong hood, kind of wrong, over a little, will at least work. the 120 could be used on the Non-IS original 300mm.

Thank You!

I have been designing and making lens hoods for large glass since august. I started with Nikon hoods and have that line pretty well covered. I'm now working on Canon hoods. My hoods are true bayonet-mount replacements. I make a "lock ring" that fits on the lens in the hood groove. I then make a hood that matches the factory dimensions (when I can get them) that will mount for shooting or reversed for storage.

I also make customs - usually shorter or longer than the standards, but I can do two piece hoods too.

I've seen the hoods on ebay, I found them very interesting. I saw that there is one for the 600mm f4l too bad that was around when I had my lens I did end up getting a newer hood from a more recent 600mm for like 150 off amazon which needed modified. I might have to buy the one for the 300mm to replace my warped hood on my 300mm 2.8l non IS like the original poster

Not sure the ET-120 hood I have for the IS lens is a match for your non-IS version, but can design one to fit - would only need a couple of simple measurements from you to match the factory hood and the lens geometry. On the larger lenses there were some geometry changes in the end of the lenses between the non-IS and IS versions. Thanks for your interest!

I found an ET-118 II online although it's in Malaysia I think. I ended up putting a Nikon HK30 on my 300mm 2.8L (non IS) it fits perfectly

https://shashinki.com/shop/canon-et-118-ii-lens-hood-p-4891.html

I know I committed two crimes, one painting my beat up canon 300mm 2.8L black the next I put a Nikon hood on it. lol I have 0 intention of ever selling this lens so I don't care what people think of it's color, i'll shoot it until it dies. Although I still am looking for a better foot for this lens

If you don't care how it looks then here is your answer for less than $10:

https://www.homedepot.com/s/rubber%2520sewer%2520coupling?NCNI-5

https://www.homedepot.com/p/The-Plumber-s-Choice-4-in-PVC-Flexible-Coupling-with-Stainless-Steel-Clamps-E72844/305473573

[Edit: I can't get the link to go to the actual item. Just look for 4 in. PVC Flexible Coupling with Stainless Steel Clamps.]

The link is for a 4-pack but I know they sell singles in-store for less than $10 (just didn't see the link). Any big box store should have them. This "hood" fits perfectly on the Canon non-IS 300/2.8 with no need for the metal clamp bands, although it takes a little work to squeeze it on. I think this actually protects better because if you hit it on something while walking, the rubber/PVC absorbs the impact. The 4"-6" version of this also works great if you want a "hood" that flares out instead of straight.
