Focus and tracking on the 1dx III surpasses any other canon camera I have used by a long shot. The only habit I have to break myself of is pumping the back button anyone who has used a canon for birds inflight would be fully aware of what I'm talking about....
Case 4 works extremely well with default settings for fast and erratic subjects like the buffle heads and oyster catcher. I mostly use "expand AF area: 4 point ", "expand AF area:surround 8 point" and "manual select: zone AF" . Fully auto work excellent also, just not much of a challenge if I use that...

Getting intimate with the camera so that you learn the little intricacies that lets the photographer get the most from there gear makes a huge difference as you have demonstrated.

Gear selection/preference is personal and as long as the gear works and it seems that your gear not only did that but it did that splendidly. Indeed, you certainly proof that the person behind the camera counts in getting those excellent images, Pius!
