Are you still favoring the “Live View” shooting or are these taken via OVF?
I’m mainly interested in the Tree Swallow shot? Live view or OVF? Are the other shots in this set also in focus? All of them or just the part?
I used OVF for the shots I posted. I took the tree swallow from a moving boat due to the waves all are not in focus due to movement. I did get 3 in focus before I lost it. I did this a few times. It did really well, best out of any Canon cameras I have used prior. The conditions where very tough, the boat captain had an A9II and was struggling too but managed a few also. There was another guy with a D500 and could not get any, my wife had the 1dx Mark II and could not get any either. Lots of movement between the bird and the boat. The boat captain also uses Canon and tried my 1dx out and liked it.
Here is a small clip of 39 still frames strait out of the camera. I used the Canon 1dx Mark III with the Canon 600mm Mk III + 2x III for 1200mm. I used the OVF to focus. The camera tracks so good using the 2x extender. I was handholding this in the wind so there is some movement.

This camera does not seemed rushed at all. A complete overhaul has been done here. This is the best upgrade from camera models for the AF ability alone. This does not need training for wildlife, it really tracks outstanding. It really is that good either in the OVF or the Live view. The 20Mp has been explained by Canon for their reasoning so it is what it is. I personally never have been bothered by the 20 MP so no biggie. Sure would it be a nice perk with more MP's sure but not needed for me anyway. The files are really good from this camera. Simply put this is the best camera I have used from Canon. Saying it was rush is just not a true statement at all. Granted you do not have to like because I do at all but Canon did do a nice job with this release. ...Show more →
Given that the upcoming R5 is now said to offer animal eye AF (birds, dogs, and cats - we need to wait on the exact details), it indeed does seem rushed, to me at least. They pushed it out for the Olympics where as they might have withheld it a bit otherwise. Still, I'm glad you are happy with the 1DX3, however, and I have been thinking seriously about dropping coin on it. However, I now think I will have to wait to see how the R5 works and also how and what features work with EF glass, as I don't intend to rush out and buy RF glass. I'd get a 1DX3 before doing that.
How does the new 600III compare to the version II? I'm assuming performance wise they are very similar. Any big differences other than the weight?
Thanks, the image quality is the same in my opinion. Where I see the biggest difference is with the extenders. The AF speed with the 1.4x III does not seem to slow down at all and the 2x III only has a small slow down. That speed with the 2x and with the better balance and weight reduction makes it now a BIF setup. I am not sure how much the new camera will speed up the extenders on the version II but it may because it improved my 400mm DO II performance with the extenders. The balance also is just perfect in my opinion, it is very comfortable to hand hold.

Still on about this? Well, good news is...Canon can't keep up, demand backlog much greater than supply...one less in line ain't bothering anyone. The rest of us with big smiles, and feeling lucky to have pre-ordered
