Anyone else notice this? Looks like Adorama finally caved and is collecting sales tax*. Makes B&H and their Payboo card even more attractive for large purchases.

*I'm in Minnesota, btw.

What Is Your Sales Tax Policy?
Orders shipping to an address in a state which requires us to collect sales tax will have local sales tax assessed. In certain cases, we may provide an estimated sales tax amount until your exact location is finalized prior to order completion.

International orders are subject to tax, duty and import fees. See International Orders.

Well, they used to not charge tax to CA despite CA being one of the states that requires tax collection. But now they do. Despite this costing me money it is the right thing to do, as I no longer ignore local B&M business when I know exactly what I want on larger purchases. But I must admit that I probably use B&H slightly more than I would have without their "Payboo" card.

Almost all online retailers started collecting sales tax (if applicable) sometime in 2019.

Has anyone done a transaction through Paypal in 2020? I'm wondering if they are applying sales tax for any sale that isn't a "friend" money transfer.

PayPal is not a retail store selling a product. the are a financial services company whos fee covers any other charges they induce supplying their services. you are responsible for paying a sales or use taxes in your state when you buy if any. technically the seller is responsible for the collection of any required taxes and to forward said collections to the proper authority.

Clearly, you know nothing about what is going on... Maybe you should not speak up and listen instead.

I take it you are speaking to me. if so rethink how you speak.

or better yet since I need to listen you should explain it to me like a real nice person would.

Paypal charges a fee, not sales tax for transactions that you do with other stores or people who don't use the friends and family transfer.

If you use paypal as your payment processor for a store you run, then it's your responsibility to collect sales tax

Holy crap... I know that. I've known that for years. I've used Paypal since the very early days and understand what they are and how their fees are structured. That is not new.

Just a few days ago, I had a conversation with a seller on Ebay who sold a camera part. He told me that Paypal is now collecting sales tax on transactions, and that it's not something that he has any control over, so I was trying to understand if Paypal has taken it upon themselves (or by mandate through the internet tax law changes) to start handling internet sales tax for any transaction that might involve a product or service.

Something has clearly changed with Ebay/Paypal and even though they are not the seller of the product, they are collecting tax. This is really not much different than a general Paypal transaction, so I was asking to understand whether this is only within the Ebay/Paypal infrastructure or is Paypal is now applying this to general money transactions that may involve a business nature, as opposed to those that are designeated as a family or friend transfer.

So now that you have explained your position there is a somewhat greater understanding. I to have used pp for a long time probably read their yearly business update emails. Looks like I will have to look into it in greater depth.

Yep, I just noticed Adorama's changed policy - it is indeed now applying taxes for PA sales. Word on the street is that some folks here in PA - yours truly excepted - have secured addresses or are making use of family addresses in DE to which shipment can be made. DE has no state sales tax. Move, counter-move, eh?

Every state has a different timeline for when they will start collecting online sales taxes -- they'll all get there eventually (except obviously the sales-tax-free states). Looks like Minnesota's started in October, but some retailers have been able to draw out the process of registering with the state for various reasons.

Can confirm the Payboo card is now worth having as long as you pay it off each month to avoid interest. It's saved me and my better half probably over $1K in sales tax in the last six months. Ironically B&H is being sued by the state of NY for allegedly underpaying sales tax for years by calculating it on discounted (instant rebate) prices instead of the full MRSP.

In the interest of "fair and balanced" reporting as to PayBoo:

OTOH, YMMV as appears to be the case of lots of folks

While I appreciate one person here was dissatisfied with the application experience,. the fact is we now have thousands of customers who have successfully applied for, received, and regularly used the Payboo card in the months since it was introduced. I cannot guarantee any individual application will be approved, of course.

Last year the law was changed to all sales within a state. No longer is a physical location within a state needed. It now includes all sales within a state. Interestingly, stock and bond sales have no taxes assessed.
