I knew there was a SCOTUS ruling on this but the title escaped my memory. Thank you.

Sorry Henry, not just one but many! I have a credit scores of 800 and had the same issue that others had. I have 3 Synchrony accounts and do $1000 per month and had the same issue.

I now don't like Synchrony credit, either with Amazon, PayPal and B&H and others using them. They suck!

This is my feeling about Synchrony.

At least in my state they also collect taxes on full price too and not promotional. Got a deal on a refurb laptop for school on eBay and had to pay taxes on the price before the discount. Not a big fan of it.

Adorama collecting sales tax in additional states is a bit of a bummer for those of us in those states, but it's at least understandable and not necessarily within Adorama's control.

But what's up with Adorama's recent changes to their shipping costs? It used to be that with their VIP program you could get most items shipped free. I was looking to make a ~$250 order today and saw that I'd need to pay $45 to get 2-day shipping on items that would have shipped free a month ago. Add sales tax on top of that and shopping at Adorama suddenly get a lot less attractive.

edit: shortly after this post I applied for Payboo and placed my order from B&H. Adorama, we had a good run...

I'm thinking $$$ will increase soon here on FM as more of us choose to buy here and pay our own "use taxes" instead of having the ever-beneficent government do it for us.

Not necessarily when you have a market that's based on supply and demand. if it gets bad enough that some people pass on the new stuff the demand for the used would go up creating scarcity. If you want to see madness look at the used auto market for Japanese bubble era cars. A few months ago my car got wrecked by a drunk driver, and I decided to look around. Most the cars from that era have sky-rocketed with probably the exception of the Miata. ST165 ST 185 all tracs could be found under 1-4k a few years ago, are now 6-10+. The undesirable 80s supra that was 2-3K is now 6+, ect, ect.
I think eventually they will hit up paypal and nail ppl on transactions for used goods. They already got ebay, next step is not too far off.

I also have excellent credit and was denied, apparently taking a hit on my credit. The subsequent required explanation I received from Synchrony was pretty much BS, a meaningless, nonspecific and vague explanation.

Of course, YMMV.

That's newly applied to some states as of January 2020. If you are a business establishment and selling to an individual or a party on the states listed, the states where the buyer resides will imply the sales tax.

Ebay, started the tax on October last year, BH as of January 10th this year, AFAIK.

B&H began collecting sales tax during May 2019.

Working as a professional, it's ultimately fine with me.

In states that require sales taxes, purchasing online without tax being charged was never a legal gift. All those states actually required payment of a "use tax" for untaxed out of state purchases. They just never had a way to follow up on it before.

As a professional who depreciated equipment for tax purposes, however, not paying the use tax for out-of-state purchases was a sword of Damocles growing ever heavier. If I wind up paying sales taxes automatically, that's not a worry anymore.

Adorama is not 'charging' sales tax. A new law came on March 1st which enables States to require retailers to 'collect' tax on their behalf. So the percentage tax you will pay is the one charged by the State to which your goods are shipped - presumably your home address. In general, if you have any questions about something related to taxes, I advise you to contact taxfyle.com. I run a small business and this service has really helped me save a lot of time and energy to complete my taxes.

The government charges sales tax, not Adorama. Remember that.

Had to think a second, Jan looked recent but last year, this thread a year old. But I looked the other day and B&H started charging sometime last year. One order in Jan didn't get charged others did. Couldn't find any adorama orders though Idk.

I personally don’t understand the rationale behind this, esp. for used goods. Or them charging sales tax for foreign purchases that aren’t usually carrying duties.

For shipments into NYS, the rule used to be that out-of-state companies needed to start charging NYS sales tax if they made more than a certain number of sales or revenues from NYS-based customers. It therefore paid to use smaller retailers who hadn’t reached the threshold yet. Not sure that still applies.

Keep in mind that the PayBoo card does not offer an extension of manufacturers warranty as some other cards do. I have used the PayBoo card for some B&H purchases, but have specifically steered away from it on other purchases where getting an extra year of warranty for the "cost" of paying sale tax made sense.

I don't fully understand it either. But, ebay collects their percent fee on the item, the tax, and the shipping. While I understand that they charge a fee for their service, I have to admit that it really irks me to pay their 12% (or whatever percent, depending on the type of item) on sales tax and shipping.

The states tax arm, in my case it's the California State Franchise Tax Board, requires EVERY business to collect tax on the applicable merchandise sold by that business and sent that tax collected to the entity requiring it's collection.
It doesn't matter if its B&H or Ado, the tax must be collected.
In the past a business selling merchandise out of state were not required to collect the tax but the END USER, that's you and I were supposed to voluntarily report it and send it to the state in the amount charged by our states but most people being dishonest and fraudulent when it comes to stealing tax dollars from the state never reported it, thus it's taken the states decades through complex legislation to have the ability to legally collect and receive their fair share of taxes.
So just pay your fair share and stop trying avoid your fiscal responsibilities!

What I don't get is why ebay charges tax on used item? I already paid the sales tax on it new so why is it charged again used?
