I should have used a slower shutter speed and panned to get some wheel movement, I was impressed at how well the AF kept up with the cyclists.

Shutter speed 1/500 : iso 800 : a9

Hi Folks,

I got this lens around Oct 2018 and sold it in 2020 after I realized I'm no longer using it (after my Canon RF 85/1.2 and 85/1.2DS acquisition )
Long story short - I decided to re-purchase it while it's still available. Amazon UK sells them for ~$1255 (import fee included), and I couldn't just pass this deal.

My question to those who tried this lens on a Sony body - is there any AF performance difference between the native(-ish?) E-mount version and the EF mount version via the MC-11 adapter? I shoot both the R5 and A1 and I think it would be wise to buy the EF version, but I'm still wondering if I will be loosing some AF speed/precision going the adapted route.

A few old shots form this great lens. Taken with the EOS R.

I love your work generally, but I had to pick my jaw up off of the floor for this one. It is just perfect. The emotion is fantastic.

Thank you! It was mostly a Nodal Ninja + PTgui test. 5 rows by 10-15 columns as far as I remember.

I've been in love with this lens since it first came out BUT I'm a landscape / environmental abstract image collector first and rarely do human/pet portrait work. That being said I see the images presented and often wonder if there is an applicable use for it with me?

Does anyone drag this beast out and shoot landscape images with it, and would you share some??

Thanks!

Al, this lens shines if you use it at wide open or close to wide open aperture to get that smooth bokeh in the background. There could be a few cases in landscape photography where this lens may be useful but there are other and more practical lenses out there to do the job. For sure, I wouldn’t take this lens on a landscape trip. With that said, there could be others that think differently and more power to them.

Thank you for helping draw me back to reality. I've heard the same thing about this lens before: "Needing vs wanting".

Love the 100ish length, too bad this lens is soooo heavy. A revamped DG DN version would be nice.

Google "bokeh panorama" - you'll find really good examples, much better than my test pics Those won't be typical landscape images, and they normally involve a foreground subject: not necessary a person, it could be a structure, a car, anything... The goal is to get a wide-angle image with a very shallow DoF. Like 14mm f/0.5 or something, which is not possible with "conventional" lenses.

Here I have "portrait of a tree" using the same method with A7Riv and 85/1.4GM (so 105/1.4 will allow even stronger background blur at cost of more stitching). It is about 12 pictures in two rows with some overlap. It covers 56 deg horizontally according to a map so that would be about 34mm. An aperture can be computed by focal length reduction, so 85/34=2.5 so 1.4/2.5=0.56 so it is 34mm f/0.56 equivalent.

I don't understand why ANYONE would ever buy this lens. It's huge and heavy.

Having said that, I bought one that got delivered yesterday ...
Planning to give it some quality time over the next few weeks to see what the hype is all about

After extensively shooting this lens for about three years (mainly portraits), I actually sold it. IMHO, it is the absolute best portrait lens available (period!), as long as you are not shooting into the sun. I'm just becoming a bit lazy in my old age and do not mind giving-up a bit of bokeh magic for smaller & lighter; however (to be honest), I'm now considering re-purchasing one, since a chronic shoulder injury has finally healed.
