New math v old math, don't know

I like the elcan much like Fred just stated, for me it really doesn't matter, I use the lens I am not flipping it as rare, I like it, and compared to something like a Voigtlander it is the same range of price, so I am happy enough with my possession and use. If in some years wherever my lenses land someone (family) can or cannot flip it for a good price, I don't care. I have lots of Nikon, Voigtlanders etc and don't ever consider whether the lenses are limited, indeed I assume all lost of much value having been driven off the lot (new Leicas certainly do !). I do have some vintage lenses, like a 1966 rigid, I have a good copy and it would flip for not that much more than a new LLL rigid even being 60 years old and in good shape, and a desirable vintage leica. The value to me is in the use..... and I know it is not rare like a "real" elcan, but then again I am very not likely to buy an original. So if it is mass production, so are most of the others (well maybe not ms-optics, but most of the others). The only thing important is to be satisfied with what I can do with the glass, if I am, it is worth every penny.

Secondly, each color has many batches, like V1L, V2L…..
Then every batch has about 998.
They can produce tens if not hundreds of thousands.
Believe me, I’m a Chinese and when I say Chinese do mass produce, they do. Never believe the “limited” crap.
And nothing is ever sold out. Go to aliexpress, eBay, temu, you can find any color of eclan for half of the official price.

Hey, please don't say that. I have just listed my LLL Elcan on eBay and have inflated its price due to its "scarcity", so please don't dispell that

On a more serious note, I have prefered to buy it from a US user/seller as a used lens (confirmed to be well calibrated and issues-free) instead of going the ebay or temu gamble and get who-knows what lemon, then start the return hassle involving tax reimbursement and all this....

On a side of this side note, I have had bad recent experiences with new Voigtlander (90mm APO-Ultron) and Leica (50mm Lux Classic new release) lenses, but the returning process was seamless within the EU.

Yeah, I believe you after the LLL experience I had pre-ordering their first release, the 35 Cron 8E replica. The pre-order was restricted to a certain number (don't recall how many) and partway through fulfillment of the preorders, it became evident that LLL was apparently sending a good chunk of its production to retailers in and around HK/China to sell at street prices more than 2x the preorder amount.

In some respects LLL reminds me of Cosina/Voigtlander, but operating on much shorter timelines. With Cosina you never know when a lens will suddenly be discontinued. But it's usually after at least a couple years. I guess LLL is a smaller operation (or it was), and are more quick to free up resources for the next releases in the pipeline. Maybe they're more like MS Optics. But the 35 Cron replica was reborn in multiple variants so I wouldn't rule out re-releases of lenses after a period of unavailability. If not, some LLL replicas could end up becoming semi-collectible in their own right due to scarcity and better affordability than the originals they were made to emulate.

Great sets! You really give the impression of having 'tamed' this beast of a lens. Or at least of having mastered its use because all of these images really play to its strengths. Thanks for keeping this thread alive and interesting!

I just read on Leica Rumors (so it must be true, right?) that LLL is developing a 300mm f/1.9. Cool, if true, but, man, that front element will be huge.

Huge. And there's no way that's not going to be crazy expensive, particularly here in the States.

And yet I already want one. I have no real need for it, but I'm sure I can find something.

Sure, it will be big, but very similar in diameter to a 600/4, just shorter. For reference, the Nikkor 300/2 from the 80s.

Sigma released their 300-600/4 for $6500... still within range of mortals.

That 300/1.9 shows MTF for 35mm format (half angle=4.1°), but claims MF coverage.
Is there any indication of the optical formula? Is it a traditional front end with 2, 3, even 4 large elements or like the single front element lightweight designs in recent years?

I'd love to have one of those 300/1.9 lens as well, seriously doubt I could afford it.

Though, it reminds me I should be using and enjoying my ol' Canon EF 200/1.8 more...

The Nikon was exactly what I was thinking of, with its 183mm diameter front and 7.5kg weight.

If the final imported price in the US is close to $6500, I'll be surprised. And that's, of course, assuming LLL plans to make a full production run of them. To me, this sounds more like a specialty cine lens someone requested them to make, but I could be wrong.

I haven't see a block diagram for it.

You should. A, it's a gorgeous hunk of glass. B, in my experience, AF lenses that aren't forced to be functioning lenses very often are more prone to loss of function. They need exercise, too.
