p.12 #1 · Fujifilm X100V Coming soon!

A well known Fuji youtuber Theoia Apophasis just said:

Not done reviewing the X100V yet...BUT, I can easily say this. It is ABSOLUTELY the MOST enabled, responsive, fixed-lens camera on the market, PERIOD flat out undeniably so. Likewise, as a former owner of both the X100F and X100T, this is far far and away the biggest upgrade of all of them over any of the others. This X100V is like going from a XT1 straight into the XT3 in capabilities over the other priors.

Some of the properties that make this a fact are: 1. MUCH sharper new lens 2. Eye AF 3. New PD-AF XT3 BSI sensor. 4. Touch to pick AF point selection (soooooo useful on this 'street' camera!!!!) 5. Larger viewfinder 6. Tilting LCD. 7. Touch swipe functionality 8. More grip-room due to moved Q button and D-pad removal.

Points 1 thru 8 make this X100V a collective HUGE win and radically better camera then its prior incarnations.

Sounds like a buy to me!

Can you select the AF point while the camera is up to your eye? How?

Sounds like hyperbole to me!

The X100v sounds like a worthy next step in the X100-series bodies, with some useful improvements. But let's not get ahead of ourselves... ;-)

I believe that you can do this with the touch screen. I've not used a modern Fuji, but I assume that you can do this also with the joystick.

The question is asking how to fit your finger between your face and the touchscreen and actually touch the spot you'd want to focus on. I'd reckon most people are using the setting that turns off the LCD when their eye is up to the EVF as well, which would be another reason for touch-to-focus not being possible when using the EVF.

My most current fixed lens camera is a X100s, so I'm pretty sure that this is a substantial upgrade. In any case, by the time my order ships, some of you will have reviewed your experience here.

Thanks for posting this. While I feel that the useful improvements of the X100v may not be worth the cost of upgrading for folks using the very good X100f, people like you with older camera models may find the difference more compelling.

On another subject unrelated to the post I commented on above... about YouTube photography advice.

The quality of that stuff is all over the map. There are some very good and very useful programs and presenters who are skillful photographers and/or are very knowledgable about gear issues, and their opinions are worth hearing. (Even with them, I urge folks to not trust any ONE such source, but to listen to more than one well-informed opinion.)

At the other end of the spectrum are you tubers who are presenting what I think of as "vanity programs." They are impressed by the successful presenters (like those I describe in the previous paragraph) and they really, really, really want to be just like them. So they set up a camera and.... blather nonsense, usually with overhyped levels of excitement and impressive amounts of hyperbole: "blows the competition out of the water!," "INCREDIBLE!," "life-changing technology!," "take your photography to the next level!," "You MUST get this!," and all the rest. (For the record overuse of ALL-CAPS HYSTERIA accompanied by exclusive exclamation marks is a "TELL!!!!!!!!!")

There's another type, too. They really have nothing to offer in terms of real expertise or insight, but they hope to become a "name" and generate lots of traffic and potentially income. Fine. But beware of the "advice" you are getting. (This phenomenon is most certainly not limited to YouTube "experts.")

I know nothing about the person whose assessment of the X100v was posted earlier in this thread. For all I know this is a serious, intelligent, well-informed poster – but the nature of the quoted text has all of the warning signs suggesting some caution.

I pulled up Flickr images of the X100, 100s, X100t and X100f. To my eye, I found more great images in the first two generations of camera, but my A9 has spoiled me in terms of responsiveness and autofocus speed and accuracy. My fast glass, like the 24mm GM and ZM 35mm f/1.4 have me shooting quite often at f/2.0, or wider, so the improved optics at f/2.0 are a big plus. The older models are still quite capable.

So it sounds like you cannot adjust the AF points while the camera is up to your eye. That's a shocking loss in functionality.

The little joystick button is still there, right? If so, it would probably have the same functionality as on the x100f and you’d still be able to change focus point with the cam to your eye, just no touchscreen af.

Yeah, I guess it is. I mistakenly thought that was removed.

I am honestly shocked to say that I agree with the angry photographer after shooting the X100V a bit earlier this week.

Posted this in one of the other x100v threads, but for anyone that likes the idea behind the X100, you're going to love the V.

The body design/ergos are better. Specifically the grip is more substantial while still feeling streamlined. The flip screen is very stealthy and pops flush to the body and I for one like having the different viewing angle options. The ISO dial is finally implemented in a more sensical way, and the action is nice and positive as you switch between iso and shutter speeds.

The EVF/OVF is noticeably better. The EVF is much nicer and the OVF's larger FOV is great. The mechanism that slides the EVF up and down was always an annoyance for me, as the sound it sliding up and down just felt kind of toy-like. They have updated it so the physical movement is dampened and silent, while also being a bit quicker. For example when I was shooting in OVF mode, you can have the EVF pop up with an image preview between shots, which feels much more seamless as the EVF pops up so much faster.

Lastly and to some most importantly, the lens is now nice and sharp at close focus distances at f2!

In stock at mikescamera.com
Online and in store

I haven't bought newly released gear in a long time from places like B&H because I always had to wait a long while from them, while smaller shops seem to have them in stock.

I was able to place an order for silver just now. Time will tell if it’s back ordered or not. Cancelled at BH
