p.2 #1 · Canon EOS R or RP with Leica M lens

Since you have the R now, you should try a Zeiss ZE lens on it. Since it has electronic contacts, the focus guide feature works with it – superb and jaw-dropping accurate, as good as zooming in to focus. When the tick-marks line up and the box turns green it's in perfect focus. And even more impressive is if you have the AF mode set to face/tracking with eye-AF enabled, the focus guide box will jump to and follow the subject's eye! I don't think any other camera on the market has this kind of eye-AF-linked manual focus aid.

The reason I went with M mount lenses is because of the nice balance of size and IQ that you get from them.
But yeah I hear you, I tried using focus guide on some EF lenses and man isn't it as good and as fun as focusing with a rangefinder.

I'm actually contemplating getting the Voigtlander 28mm 2.8 and 40mm 4 EF mount lens for fun next.
the ZE 21mm 2.8 would be great for landscape but I don't see myself going out or travelling with it.

p.2 #3 · Canon EOS R or RP with Leica M lens

Thought I'd resurrect an older thread.

Just picked up an R body off a FM'er here after mothballling my 5DIV for a Sony A7II. Mirrorless EVF really just makes things so much easier, plus I get to use all my character-filled vintage glass. Stuff like the artifact- and aberration-laden 7Artisans lenses look like a mild step up from Lensbaby: nowhere near sharp or perfect, but so much texture and glow.

Here's the thing: My favorite lens is the Summicron-M 50 on a TAP autofocus adapter. It looks like no such thing exists for the Canon R bodies, most likely because the AF protocols aren't publicly available, unlike Sony.

Worse, it sounds like the consensus is that the amazing converging-triangles Focus Guide doesn't work without a chip, and I can't find any LM to RF adapters with a chip.

Does anyone know if this is even possible, and if so, if any companies are planning on developing something like the old Dandelion chip for EF?

Thanks!

I have always found it is best to use cameras and lenses as they were designed. If you want a Leica experience, get a Leica. There are used 240s out there that aren't too bad. If you need to worry about IQ or grain or fringing it probably wasn't a good photo to begin with.

Not all M mount 35 are the same but that tends to be the widest FL you can go with minimal purple in the corners during my research. I think the leica 35 asph and zeiss 35/1.4 tend to do better in the corners. Still trying to find a good resource for information on this.

R5 with Voigtlander 15 v2 at f11 (leica m to RF fotodiox pro adapter) - its such a nice small lens - I want it to work

used optics profile photoshop voigt 15 v2 in opening

Still considerable purple cast but like fixable. The walls and cabinets are all the same colour (purplish in kitchen)

I will try it tomorrow outside with snow.

[Now I just need to see if I can correct the purple vignetting with a profile - that will take time]

Out my Upper Deck den with Snow f11/manual focus

Out my Upper Deck den with Snow. f11/manual focus

Kitchen Closer in

My Lower Den Closer in

With attempt at removal of colour cast (divide by profile in Photoshop)

Fundamentally this is true. I'm not trying to contradict you, but.....

I owned an M240 and the color smearing with the CV 21/4 is the same as I have seen in these samples I am seeing. Though it might be that the M240 is much sharper due to thin sensor stack etc.

My problem is I love the jewel like build and optical excellence of rangefinder lenses. They feel worth holding onto forever.
I enjoy using a real RF but I am must faster at focusing through an EVF.

This is a niche market for sure. So no one, save Kolari, is going to serve such a limited market.

It would be great if Leica would put out a FF EVF camera that wasn't the shape of an SLR and the size of the Chrysler building.

35 ultron is great on r5, i tried it on r and agree norners no good. I purchased the lens for use with the r5. Leica r is nice on the eos r, i used 35-70f4 quite a bit with it.

bumping this as I bought an EOS R to try out my M lenses.

wide-angle lenses like my CV 21mm Color Skopar and CV 35mm Ultron suffer purple corners
my 50mm summicron, no issues.
will have to try my 90 T-E next.

p.2 #9 · Canon EOS R or RP with Leica M lens

I have an R7 body for a few weeks' demo. I tested most of my Leica M and LTM mount lenses on it.

Good news is none of the lenses show any edge color shift. Maybe not such a surprise because it's APS-C.

Bad news is a lot of my lenses need to be stopped down to f/5.6 for decent across-frame performance if nitpicking edge sharpness.

Better performers are: Leica 21/3.4 SEM, Voigtlander VM 35/1.7, Zeiss ZM 50/2 Planar, Leica 90/4 Macro. One problem is the Urth adapter allows slight focus beyond infinity, which can have negative image quality consequences with floating element designs such as my 21, 28 and 50 Luxes. Those all need f/5.6-8 with the 50 closely followed by the 28 as the best of the trio.

I also tested the VM15/4.5 III and no color shift. But again, APS-C. 32MP APS-C sure does reveal CA in that lens, as well as the 21 and 28 Luxes...
