p.1 #1 · a7III Firmware update issues - not recognizing the camera
Hi all - I did a search, as well as a general web search, but I'm not finding a solution that works. I just got an a7III, and I'm trying to upgrade the firmware on it. It's currently on version 1.1, so never got the 2.1 update. I've received the 'can't find a camera' issue when the usb is plugged in (with the usb cord from the box). I've taken the battery out, nothing else is open, restarted, etc etc. Also downloaded it on another laptop and still no dice.
I read on another forum with the a7s that you can't skip an update and jump from 1-3, but I can't find a working link to 2.1 anywhere.

I do. Set to Mass Storage, no other applications open, memory card is out of the camera. I ordered another usb cord to see if maybe that's the issue. The one that came with the camera seems a little wobbly, so maybe it's not connecting all the way?

Are you on a Mac or PC? If on a Mac and the latest Catalina OS I read a previous report on this forum that the Sony updating software doesn't work yet with Catalina OS. Hopefully, it will be updated soon!

Check your USB cord. I literally just ran into this with my A7rii in updating another lens.
I set camera to mass storage (and PC seemed to find it) but the app couldn't find camera. I used a better USB cord (the one I originally tried is cheap 3rd party) and it worked.

I should have the new usb cord today so hopefully it's just that.
For whatever reason, the camera is sensitive to the type of USB cord. I had this same issue and tried several USB cords, and only the one that came with it worked (I know it doesn't for you in this case). So if you order a new one I would make sure it is OEM and supports data transfer. I believe the issue may be that some USB cables lack pin connections for data transfer.

Thanks all! It was the usb that seemed to be the issue. Ordered a 3rd party one thru Amazon and it worked just fine. Also seemed to fix the issue I had with it not recognizing the 128g card in the first slot.
