I think I have a winning combination for myself. I can't be wrong after almost 5,000 shots in 7 days . My 300f2.8IS +1.4X is my personal favaorite. Even with 2X, the 300f2.8IS produces very useable images. Here are two with the 300f2.8IS + 1.4X and one with the 2X on 1D Mk2:
