Good point. In my experience it seems that excitement usually comes from a combination of the specs with the price. For instance, if this lens turns out to be as good as the GM and Sigma sells it for $1,100, the excitement and sales will be higher than if they sell it for $1,500.

I think Sigma's new lens offerings are terrific and definitely provide a great alternative to the GMs.

I believe I'm in the minority and really like my 24-70GM, definitely don't consider it a "lesser GM" when compared with any of the earlier GM lenses that I own. Sure, the most current GMs being introduced utilize the experience, learning and advancements that Sony has developed over the past few years. But that is to be expected.

I will not be surprised if the Sigma is sharper than the GM, actually I would be surprised if the Sigma isn't sharper. But one thing that makes me stay with the GMs right now over the Sigmas is the customizable button on the GM lenses. I'm willing to give up some sharpness for the usability that the button offers. (I'm not a pixel peeper and don't create large prints very often, so the slightly reduced sharpness doesn't readily show up in my photos)

I believe the Sigma 24-70/2.8 DG DN has a custom button as well. (Same for the 14-24/2.8)

The Sigma also has 18cm MFD vs 38cm for the GM.

Thanks Fred, You know I got confused a little bit, because I thought I saw that button before. But when I went to B&H and looked at their 360 degree views...I didn't see that button!

Definitely a case of user error! Thanks for pointing that out to me.

That would be a GM killer as it’s still listed at $2,200. It would also significantly impact the GM used pricing.

I recently sold my Canon 24-70/2.8 II. That lens rocked on my A7R2 & A7R3. By far, the best adapted lens from an AF standpoint (on Metabones), and the IQ matched my very good Sigma 14-24 at 24mm. I only sold it because I am slowly weaning off my Canon gear and I got a decent Sony 24-105 to replace it.

Damn. This is one time in my photography career where i think i might get a 24-70 2.8 as i never had one 😁. The fact that sigma is giving the AF-L customizable button on their newest mirrorless lenses is a killer feature! Pretty excited to see the reviews that will come soon. I too am predicting somewhere around $1200.

1200$ would be nice, but I don't think this is going to happen. The 14-24mm was 100$ more expensive that the DSLR counterpart. I also expect at least 100$ more for this 24-70mm, which brings it to 1400 - 1500$.

Someone earlier in this thread questioned Sigma autofocus vs. Sony. I do not have enough personal experience on that issue. Do others?

I’m excited for this too. Used GM’s still go for $1600. This could severely alter that amount. I always found the Tamron a great bet but 28 just too damn limiting. I could also do with nicer bokeh. The way Sigma has been handling bokeh recently make me curious for this lens.

Sigma definitely has a great track record recently but again midrange zooms are very hard to get right, both in the basic optical design and more importantly on copy variation. This is definitely one we'll have to wait and see.

You beat me to it as at this price, I just pre-ordered too! Using B&H's Payboo card to lower my costs.

With Sigma's recent track record, I'm hoping it will be a next gen improvement over my 24-70GM. At least I'll have time to test and compare the two before deciding whether to return the Sigma or sell the GM.
