This reads as is if they're not even going to ship stock they do have because they can't satisfy the full demand. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that.

Others on dpreview said the same - it's due to how Dpreview paraphrased Sigma's statement. Their actual statement reads:
Apology for the supply status of "SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art
Thank you for your patronage of Sigma products.
SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art is scheduled to be released on Friday, December 20, 2019. Orders that exceed our expectations at SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | It has become. For this reason, we apologize to some customers that it may take some time for the product to arrive.
We apologize for the inconvenience of our customers and the people who are waiting for our products, but we are currently working hard on production, so please be patient.

I happened to call to cancel an order and inquired if they new when it was coming in and they happened to 5 that showed up that morning....so I bought it
Very solid lens
I called B&H today and was told that they received multiple shipments in the past weeks but each shipment was only about 30 units. And not sure on the future shipments. My order was placed on Dec 12th and there are still over hundred people in front of me as of today, so I went ahead and cancelled my order.

Multiple shipments of 30 units would likely also be over one hundred. You probably wouldn't have been waiting very much past the release date.
I don't get the obsession of preordering with the big two. I always go elsewhere and have been very successful at getting things at release. I guess what helps me is all the people who stick to the big 2.

Because they’re generally very reliable, good about returns and return shipping, don’t actually charge you until the item actually ships and especially if you’re preordering on the day the orders open, you stand a good chance of receiving it early or on time because of their stock compared to local shops.
Outside of that preorder window it can be easy to find things at smaller shops. But it’s not always the simplest transaction. Last time I ordered from a small shop I did it over the phone and had to endure 20 extra minutes of attempted sales on extra batteries for my camera, filters, chargers, etc. He made me conference in the credit card company because I wanted to ship to a different address than the billing address for the card and then ended up over charging me. When I called to address the over charging the guy was insistent I should just take store credit to, again, use for extra batteries, filters, chargers, etc. He eventually credited the amount back to my card. He was never rude or anything like that - it was just such a “thing” when all I wanted to do was press a button and pay the full price - no more, no less - for a lens.

There are many smaller shops with online stores where you will never need to speak to a person. Every single preorder that is popular has threads where people are waiting, sometimes for months. I hear you though. I use bandh, but strictly for non preorders.
Interesting my experience is completely opposite from yours. For newly released popular items it is much easier/quicker to get them from local stores or online smaller shops. Two big online stores are generally better for items that have been around, at least from my experience. However by ordering from these two big stores through Fred’s links I believe FM can earn some $?

Surprised to see chris review this one so quickly. Performance looks pretty good for a standard zoom yup. I noticed the distortion is on high end for the wide focal length. They probably let it be like that to rely on in camera corrections. Wonder if dustin abbot will review it anytime. His and chris's reviews are my favorite. Still for the money it looks pretty good 😁
Dustin Abbott's reviews are now two segments only, which is an improvement I like the guy regardless.

I put my name down for one as soon as they were announced due to my experience with the 14-24mm and the 35mm 1.2. Ive downloaded a few of the full res samples including Cameralabs and printed a few large as an initial preview. The corners are not fantastic at 24mm. They look to be on par with my GM that I recently sold in anticipation of this.
The irony is I have, in the last day or 2, acquired a very cheap Canon 24-70mm 2.8 II again. It was too good to pass up with the intention of selling it on. I gave this a test on the R4 and its simply sensational right into the corners at 24mm. Im not a big fan of adapted glass so Im torn which way to go on this one....

Gerald Undone's review (which is just up) notes that, with in-camera corrections off, "24mm" on the Sigma is wider than 24mm on the 24-70 GM, which is presumably to give leeway for the corrections. That's the strategy taken by the Sony 24-105 too.
