Some designers choose a longer focal length in a normal lens because they can achieve a better image quality by doing so. I don't have any problem getting used to a lens if its focal length is approximately suitable to the application, the exact number doesn't matter.

In Nikon's case, 58mm is the focal length of the original Noct-Nikkor and so it has some symbolic value. Also for DX users, 58mm may be a good focal length for head and shoulders portraits, for what it's worth.

Kudos to Nikon. For those complaining about the pricing, surely have not invested in a Leica system Seriously many of the lenses are truly amazing and yes you decide whether want to or not to buy into the system. Personally as a portrait photographer I look for special renderings in lenses and generally faster lenses give you the look and style but not all. Generally my favorites have been Mandler designed lenses and many of the lenses are f/2. You see many photographers invest in so many different lenses and yet few really gel with their style and you end up spending more and yet none are a great choice.

If the 58/0.95 S truly performs it will be sought after and for most it is will available as rental. The weight is a concern but with a good grip I rarely notice the weight of the lens.

Let us wait and see how the lens performs in our hands

Can't really compare Nikon with Leica, because Nikon quality is all over the place, while Leica is very consistent over more than half a century using it, which started with my dad's photography days, or actually since WWII.
Yes, prices are much higher but the after sales service are untouchable by any company I have used so far. Even in a country where there is no servicing and having to send them back to Germany by the local distributor without paying a cent or penny. Everytime the products came back, it looks like new without having to asked them to change this or that. And the warranty can be life time to 30 years or 9 (this might be 15 or 10 because it went back at 9) years and not like 1 for Nikon. Many a times the products went back for cleaning and calibration after many years of use and not like Nikon within the first year with defects.
Not only that, at times one has to challenge Nikon to get it fix while for Leica I just have to tell them my problem and they will do the rest. Never have I have to return the product more than once. Not like Nikon after returning for a number of times and still couldn't get it fixed.
That is the difference between Leica and Nikon. 😂
It can also be the reason why there is still a loyal following of this brand.
But I must admit that their electronics and firmware are years behind the Japanese.

I err to disagree here Some of the Nikon lenses like the 28E, 105E and 70-200E are second to none including Leica. I had several M9's, M240's including a Monochrom and at the time they were at the height of performance/weight/size at a cost

With Leica I had many issues where I had to send back numerous times my 28 Cron Apsh, 35 FLE, 50 Lux Asph for repairs to Solms and it would take on average 12 weeks. Also with the M240's re-calibration required sending to Solms and again this was a 8 to 10 week. The M240's required re-calibration after about 6 to 12 months after traveling as just a mere bump would set of the calibration. Leica is wonderful but the turnaround drove me crazy.

With Nikon my only returns have been the D750 a grey copy and still no charge and my 58G to bring down the AFT correction. I have had very little issues. With Sony service in Australia that is for another thread

Immediately I can help you to identify a problem from one of the lenses you mentioned above.
Take a look at your 105mm f/1.4E ED with both the lens caps off and shine a bright light from the bottom and look from the top and see how many particles or stars (as the sales person was asking me) are there in your lens. Every single lens coming out of their factory has them. And Nikon has done some rework on their existing stocks to clean them up with an orange dot on the box for the indicated rework, but still having them on my 2nd unit I just bought 12 days ago and only have it registered yesterday. Even their showcase unit has them but a lot less to what they are still selling.
Now, see when Nikon is going to voluntarily do a recall to clean up this mess including my first unit which was replaced but still having them and now is out of warranty.
Then there is this out of focus issue for both the 17-35mm f/2.8D (I have 2 units of this, one has the problem while the second one bought in Japan slightly more than a year ago does not) and 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G VR. Many of the units has problem with acquiring focus at the long end wide open at infinity, and Nikon told users like us that they are within specs. When I said "us", it is because on one occasion I even met a fellow photographer sending in his unit for the same problem.
We are here talking about lenses that cost a few thousand dollars each and not just a few hundred dollars.
This is what I called loosing faith with a brand's quality and service.

As for the turn around time for Leica servicing in Germany, I do agree with you because for me is between 3 to 6 months depending if they have the parts that are out of production.

I have had my 105E for 2 years and I did read about the issue but mine is fine. If the 28E was available as a Leica I would have paid 3 to 4K at the time if size was reduced. Most camera systems will have some issues and I have had less with my Nikon, than Leica, Canon, Fuji and Sony. In Australia, Nikon service is great and often just a calibration is done while I wait for 1/2 hour. My experience with Sony service has been terrible but this is not for discussion here.

As mentioned before I am moving to Spain in beginning of December so new gear is out of the question for now. I have quite an inventory of Nikon, Sigma, Nikkor, Leica R lenses so this will keep me going.

As regards to the 58/0.95 S this lens does excite me as 58mm is a favorite FL for street portraits. With my M 50 Nocti f/1.0 most of my street portraits were done at f/1.0. The choice of the 58/0.95 S should come down to, does it suit your style of photography? In my case it is ideal as I love sharp at wide open and then stopping down to suit for the look I want. I have always preferred the painterly qualities of lenses and is why I love Mandler designs. Here are some shots as to the style that I really enjoy from the streets of Tainan, Taiwan

What imposter killed Leica in Singapore and impersonated them with such attentive service? Here in the U.S. their reputation for after-sales support is...much diminished.

I will have to take your words for your copy, but so far every single copy I have inspected got them (around 10 copies), even the 2 at the Nikon office and their new show room has them. What Nikon told me is that there will always be some. Can you believe it coming from them.
It is either you're really lucky or you don't know how to check them. Use your flash light on the back of your smartphone and try it again up close. The light source must be strong and point source and not from a table lamp which most of the time one will missed them.
And by the way those are really nice pictures of people. 👍

sirimiri,
The imposter is their branch office in Singapore, just a small office a few floors from the Austrian Embassy. 😊
There is one major showroom and it is located in the most expensive hotel in Singapore where the Queen of England, Micheal Jackson and those rich and famous stays.
While in the states it is usually 3rd parties or just the distributors.
Not sure which part of California and where you sent it to for your servicing. Yes, maybe it has diminished where you are due to what is happening to trade barriers and tariffs. Cost has definitely gone up for shipping and parts. But when I was around the states and had to send it in for servicing. I have no issue so far. Not so much for Zeiss though, it has to go to NY before at time having to go back to Germany.

I have to report that my 105/1.4e does not have the dust problem that I could see from casual inspection with flashlight. I picked mine up the day it was released in Thailand so should be from early batch as well. So far, I have to say that I am quite please with Nikon service here.
No argument that Leica service that I received in the past is exemplary but at a price of waiting minimum 6 months. Many friends sent their M9 in for sensor change and average waiting time is 6-9 months. I dropped my 24-90 SL lens and sent it back in for repair and it was 6 months. I have to give credit though, Leica Germany did not charge me anything for the repair but somewhere along the way from Leica Thailand to Germany via Leica Singapore, I was charged $60 shipping fee which I thought was kind of funny. A few times I sent my lenses to Nikon, it was always less than a week except once when they had to get part from Japan that took a few weeks.
Now whether Nikon is capable of building lens to the same standard as Leica, I sincerely have no doubt. Look at my 500/4e FL which actually cost more than the majority of current Leica lenses. craftmanship, finish and feel seems to belong to the same class. At least to my consumer eyes. (may be the size of 500/4e FL also helps making it look like it should be that expensive but you know what I mean, everything about it makes it look like it should cost $10,000+).
Yeah, 105/1.4e, 28/1.4e while nice and good lenses in their own right, they don't feel like they are in the same class as Leica (touch, feel, appearance etc) but no one would expect them to.
Personally, if I am going to spend $us8000 on Nikon, I would not hesitate to do so just like I would a Leica. btw, I went to drop my Sony into my local shop for sensor cleaning as I could not get rid of annoying spot myself after trying everything at home, they showed me a mint copy of 35/2 8e blackpaint that they just got in. Now, I have to wonder if after 30-40 years, what would a Noct Nikkor be like. Would it still stay in as good a shape? I doubt the price will even come close to this little beauty. No, I am not in any danger of buying one Just need to drool on the case it is in, a little bit.

Nice to know yours does not have the issue, just keep them coming I will bring this to show it to Nikon and have them fix or will have to file a small claim court report here. No more telling me it is within specs and there will always be some. 😊

Actually, I am very happy with the service in Singapore, but is the quality coming out of the factories and the decision handled by Japan that is the problem. If Japan has given the instructions to fix every factory defects, then I don't see a problem. But, if Japan is controlling the repair costs, then the staff here got no choice but to push it around.

Definitely, if I have this kind of issue, I would not be happy either.

suteetat,
That mysterious $60 that you were talking about, I think the charge was imposed by Leica Singapore. Recently, about a couple of months ago, I received an email informing all users that there will be a shipping cost if not bought from a local distributor.
Anyway, so long as you got back a good unit, that is all it matters. 🙂
Who knows, those units might have been traveling on an Austrian Diplomatic plane. 🤣

This was may be 3-4 years ago so I don't know if Leica Singapore had any policy liked that at the time. My SL stuffs were not grey market. Really kind of annoying though. My understanding is that turn around time in Germany is actually quite fast. Changing sensor for M9 generally took about 2 weeks if you drop off your stuff to Leica dealer in Germany. At least, I think I read that somewhere. The 6 months turn around time seems to be mostly transit time to and from Germany.

I only received this information just a couple of months ago, so might be some other charges then.
If the turn around time in Germany is only 2 weeks, then it couldn't be traveling by air. Maybe on a Diplomatic cruise. 😇
If you have seen their standard reusable shipping containers, you will be impressed. It sure gives a sense of moisture resistant and security while in transit.

! Too true. I had all kinds of electronics and calibration issues with my M kit, including a broken “on” switch on an M240. To Leica’s credit, they fixed that out of warranty. Less to their credit, it took 8 weeks. Same story in fixing my 90mm summicron, except that one took 3 months.

It's mildly amusing watching people slag off on those who want this impressive Nikon lens. They gripe, mostly about the cost. There are many things far more expensive than this lens. If they are willing to pay to enjoy this lens and get the very rare niche benefit that comes with it, that should be celebrated.

Mindless gear arguments were one of many things that caused me to grow bored with the photographic community. I looked for a new hobby and ended up spending way, way, waaaay more to enter the Lotus community. A nicer, more supportive group does not exist.

The Alfa 4C is indeed very nice, but no manual is a deal breaker for me. I've never once owned an automatic transmission car and my first one will never be a sports car like the 4C. Plus, the Alfa is 400 pounds heavier than the Lotus Elise. I seriously doubt there will ever be a car sold again that is less than 2000 pounds, like the Elise is.

Can you buy Caterham 7s in the US? I’ve seen a few in LA.
