Since we want to showcase the resolving capability of the camera, then we might as well include the crop... Disclosure: the setup was on a tripod and the image was cropped slightly; I didn't want to disturb any wildlife and this is about the closest I could get to it without intimidating the owl. I didn't bring my 2X TC with me today. With that it would have been frame filling, I would say. The resolving power of this camera is huge...

Wow that’s some detail. Joshua I did not know you grabbed one. Good for you

End of day all I care about is that it’s close to the A9 or a little faster than the III. Sounds like it.

Thanks, Guy! Your description about the AF performance being in the middle between the A9 and A7r III is about right.

Haha, whatever it takes to lighten up your wallet, Sunny . If it is of interest, I did post an owl in flight image using the A7r IV on the last page of the GM 600mm image thread: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1608589/14

Seem like a 1/3 of a stop or more? When I had a 40/60 Mpx back same type of sensor the 60 was almost a 1/2 stop faster to diffract. But they where CCD sensors not CMOS not sure if that has any relevance

The remains of this crab caught my eye, it was up in a tree, 6-7 feet off the ground

A lot of detail here to work with, imo

So is anyone seeing diffraction a little sooner than there A7rIII with same lens. Given the smaller pixel pitch I would expect something

I didn't do a formal comparison, but on my macro shots I'd say it's about 1/2 stop sooner, maybe a little more.

The detail available is impressive.

I've included a few shots from the zoo today (light was still pretty crappy, but it did fine). I've also included 100% crops from both.

100% crop (600px)

100% crop (600px)

Hiked to the summit of a mountain today (I'm going to be quite sore tomorrow) and took the 100 STF GM and the iv. I love the ability to crop more with the added resolution. In the last two images of the same photo the first is a light crop, the second a bit heavier.

Yes, Bear Mountain. I was assured by my friends that even though I hadn't been hiking in 20 years this trail wouldn't be a problem. Spoiler alert - getting up and down the area around the summit was a little dicey. Happily, I lived to tell the tale

Bird in flight with Sony A7R IV. It is possible but the stick rate is not consistency. Sometime it will just drop the focus during panning. Subject tracking feature is not responsive as A9. Initial subject acquiring is also a tad slower than A9. All of those are all expected. After all, this camera design for landscape/portrait. You can do wildlife with this for insane close up portrait, big and slow flying bird. Not too busy or same color background.
