p.1 #1 · The art of catching your food mid-air!

Congratulations to AGeoJO for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 3 votes - View Previous Winners

These burrowing owls are quite active when the air is getting warm. They love eating June bugs and they hunt for and catch them mid-air, at least most of the time. Although occasionally, I have seen them spot bug on the ground and they dove after them. They carry their prey back to the area where they feel safe near their burrow to devour them. The success rate of the adults is excellent while the juveniles are still learning and miss more than just a few times. These actions make photographers come out to the location in droves.

Here is a set of images of a burrowing owl how to catch a June bug mid-air. I got lucky that the action took place fairly close and the FL of the lens was just perfect for it. The second through the last image were captured in a sequence. Although seemingly fitting, the first image was captured not in the same sequence but earlier. It seems that the owl in the first image is not quite mature and has not quite mastered the art of capturing June bugs.

Thank you for looking and please feel free to leave a feedback,
Joshua

So when will we see the June Bug as the subject and the BO as the OOF companion

You are making it look easy Joshua but I am sure that keeping the target in the viewfinder is still a challenge! These are amazing..............!
Oh, and I voted too...............

My oh my, it is just perfect. What a sequence !!! I am speechless . They are small, fast and can be irratic, but here you go and capture these marvelous shots. Outstanding. Haven’t seen it done better, stunning work.

Terrific sequence! I always thought the owls used their beaks to catch bugs. Not so!

Karl, thank you very much! I got lucky on that sequence because the action happened fairly close and it was perfect for the 600mm setting of the lens. Now, I got some help and it was discussed here in the lower half of this page: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1608589/9. It is a device that lets you follow the action though the sight and NOT through the viewfinder. I missed so many shots trying to follow actions through the tunnel vision of the viewfinder. On the first day I used that device last week and I got the images I posted above. Granted I was lucky based on the distance and lighting but without that device, I may have missed it. Hope this helps.
