Looking good! Love the “pop” of the first two.
Thanks. I recently acquired the A7RIII (from here) and sold my a6500, and one of the reasons is this lens. I had and RII for a little while and the Tamron 28-75, and while that's a stellar combo for IQ, it was just too big and cumbersome. I used it on a big trip to Africa but then sold it on return and was using APS-C again. When the a6700 got announced, I was a bit underwhelmed. No upgraded EVF, no control wheel, and at the same time the RIIIs started flooding the market from people moving to the IV, and this lens had just been released.... So here I am, and now that I'm using it, I don't think I'll be getting a zoom any time soon. This 35 paired with the new Samyang 18 make for a very light and versatile kit.
Man, mjk115, your pictures are starting to convince me to buy this lens.
I've been on a lookout for a nice 35mm (used to own the 35mm L mk2 for Canon back in the day), and this seems like a great lens for me, since I'd rather have a lighter lens. If only the 24mm GM was actually a 35mm, because whenever I see portraits with it, I feel like "I would've cropped this a bit", so I really probably want something in the 30-40mm range.
Whenever I visit the thread for the Sigma 1.2, the images in there are SO good, but that lens is SO 1kg :/
A whole lot of the images in this thread are tests of foliage at good/bad distances and stuff, and not too much for portraits.
Your kids pictures are exactly the type of pictures I intend on taking, family outings/travel/daily life, and for the most part, that seems like plenty enough bokeh for me.
For the last while, almost two years now, I've owned only the a7mk3 and the sony 55mm (also had a Batis 135, but sold it).
Now strongly considering picking up the Sony 35mm 1.8, and then later the Samyang/Rokinon 85mm 1.4. And perhaps later either the Tamron 17-28, or the new Tamron 20mm 2.8. And then the Tamron 70-180?

after I complete the Tamron 2.8 trinity, I'de like to try out this lens. mjk115's photos look great, and that's usually the working distance I like. I understand that close up, the bokeh can be poor, but other than that, looking good.

Thanks Yarik, I'm glad you like the pictures. I'd say this lens is hard to beat from a quality to size perspective. I've been waiting for a good 35 that wasn't huge for a long time as well, and this is it for me. If you're not in a huge rush, you might want to wait and see if any deals get offered around holiday time, as I imagine the price of this lens will eventually settle a little closer to $650, but who knows? Maybe it will be like the Tamron 28-75 and get more expensive.
My 3 prime kit is now the Samyang 18 F2.8, and the Sony 35 and 85 F1.8s. Good luck with your own decisions and thanks again.

I concur, great shots mjk115! My 35mm 1.8 should be delivered on Monday and every time you post I got more and more excited to play with it.
I've got the 85mm 1.8 and Tamron 17-28/2.8 and am thinking this 3 lens kit will do nearly everything for me. Though that Samyang 18mm looks very interesting and I may pick it up at some point and try it vs the Tamron or maybe keep them both so I have an ultra light ultra wide option.

I wish Sony would revive the old Minolta 135 F2.8 with the built-in slide-out hood, and then I'd go for it. That GM beast is a thing of beauty though.
Yeah the 135mm GM is a bit much for me (both size/weight and cost). But I would be all over a 135/2.8 FE in the mold of the Maxxum 135mm. The good ol' pocket rocket was one of my favorite lenses when I had my Alpha DSLRs. Fantastic image quality and under 400g!
We have surprisingly similar thought process on this. I could have written that
I have exactly the same set: 35/1.8, 55, Samyang 85
I have been contemplating 17-28 also but haven’t bought it yet. After lots of going back and forth I actually bought 24-105 and maybe i will wait for a wide prime (15mm) thats as small as CV 21 3.5.
Coming back to 35, its a fantastic lens and i am extremely happy with it. The images above show how nice and smooth the bokeh can be at 1.8. Superb lens.

You’re selling me the lens with those pictures man, I love them!!!
Did you use capture one to edit?
Thanks for the kind words. I edited these in Lightroom. When I originally came over to a Sony a6500 from Fuji, I had a lot of trouble getting skin tones right in LR, and I ended up buying Capture 1 and I had been using it and happier with its colors, but I was never quite as comfortable or skilled with the program itself as I felt with LR. When I acquired the RIII, for some reason I started messing around with LR again, and I've found that if I start with the Camera Light profile, I get skin tones much closer to what I want. So now I'm back in with LR. Thanks again,
Mike
