https://www.canonrumors.com/a-bit-more-about-the-canon-eos-1d-x-mark-iii-cr2/ Curious what others thing of this, obviously it’s a rumor and should be taken with a grain of salt but it doesn’t seem unrealistic. I’m really hoping it’s false because that seems like a pretty minor update to the AF system.

I think the one thing I've learned over the past 10 years of watching rumors and then watching reality is that when the rumour impresses you it never comes to fruition. When the rumour is down to earth, it is likely correct.

The day before the A9II was announced there was a small footnote rumour on SAR that said it had the same sensor and FPS....the second I saw that I knew it was going to be true and it was 24hrs later.

I don't know what people are expecting from the 1DXII, I actually can't even come up with an imagined set of specs for it. For me I'd want 5D4 sensor at 14FPS with a new AF system. Other than that, not sure?

This rumour saying it has 61 points and a little more spread out seems reasonable as we know optics don't allow for a much bigger spread than what we already have (without on sensor AF). Having the same number of points doesn't tell us anything good or bad about the AF system (other than they aren't going to throw out imaginary numbers like Nikon's 153pts).

Geoff to me, this most likely mean a further refinement of the 1DXIII AF sensor. Maybe they improved detection, AF CPU operates faster, colour metering is higher resolution etc so it will stick better and acquire a lock faster. Also if they improve the tracking algorithms it might be a a decent upgrade, but all speculation. I don't think we'll see a big jump in AF performance, hope I'm wrong. It is clear though Canon didn't see the point in designing an all new PDAF sensor for essentially a last-in-the-line DSLR, so how much more they can wring out of the 1DX AF is not clear. Will Nikon do the same thing, probably.

Nokishita has found that Canon just registered a camera that takes LP-E19 battery for certification.

https://twitter.com/nokishita_c/status/1186914500999442432

That probably throws question on the latest rumour about the new battery with new features....meaning the entire rumour is probably false. But it also suggests that the camera is going to come much sooner than previously rumoured Feb and CR updated the latest post saying that they heard it will be "addressed" fairly soon. Full announcement or teaser?

Some ancient standards in that lot, 802.11n, BT4.1, can we still expect USB2?

PhotoPlus starts tomorrow, would be cool if they make some sort of announcement there. Or even better if they had it on display, but I’m not holding my breathe on that.

This week could be the official introduction of the 85 and 70-200 RF lenses but I picked up a hint somewhere that something else could also see the light...and it could be interesting. Let’s wait and see

Breaking news....it looks like a 1DXII but has a new arrangement of ports (and a new card door)...WOW....don't even know what the point of seeing the pictures would be??

I was not expecting any radical design differences, best I was hoping for was a reduction in weight to the same as the 1DIII, the lightest 1 series and similar weight to D5. 200g would be nice. I'll bet those extra 8MP add another 15g though.

Nokishita has found an article about the 1DXIII on a famous overseas news site still hidden from public domain.

I have to check back because this is the same thing they found for another piece of gear recently (I think A9II) and it wasn't long till the announcement after that.

Just checked and it was the A9II...after they found the unreleased article the camera was announced same day or next day. Canon is announcing stuff tomorrow so I guess the 1DXIII is going to be the surprise along with the other lenses we all know about.

Ok, wasn’t expecting them to drop an announcement so soon. I expect D6 announcement next month based on their teaser announcement/full announcement history having about a 2 month gap. Maybe they wan’t to try and stop people switching to A9II

Oh yay, maybe I can get one for the tail end of the football season!

It would be odd timing for a 1D announcement prior to an Olympics year, though IIRC, the original 1D was announced in the fall of 2001 and started shipping around early December. Mind you, that was just ahead of the 2002 Salt Lake City winter Olympics.

This could still leave the door open for another pre-Olympics announcement...

It's live on DPReview

But it's 'just' a product development announcement with few details:

It's no surprise that the heart of the new camera will be an all-new CMOS sensor with Dual Pixel AF and a new Digic processor. That combination will be able to produce not only standard JPEG and Raw files, but also 10-bit HEIF files for a greater tonal range than JPEGs are capable of. The Dual Pixel AF region of the sensor will cover 90% of the frame horizontally and 100% vertically, with 525 AF areas. We don't yet know the sensor's resolution, but Canon is touting "incredible low-light shooting capabilities," so while we're not anticipating a huge pixel count, you should expect high ISO performance to be very good (the older 1D X II was no slouch).

Canon has also updated the autofocus system used through the optical viewfinder - we don't know how many AF points there will be, but we're told that the central AF pixels have "28 times the resolution" of the 1D X II, and the ability to focus accurately in "even brighter and darker conditions than before." New autofocus algorithms utilize deep learning.

Also interestingly (and cryptically), Canon is touting a new way to control autofocus points by using the AF-On button. We have no idea what this means, but we'll bring you more details as they become available.

In terms of speed, the new camera will shoot at 16 fps through the optical viewfinder with autofocus, and 20 fps with AF when in Live View mode, whether you're using the mechanical or electronic shutter. The camera will come with dual CF Express card slots, and the buffer has been increased by five times compared to its predecessor.

-----------------------

Hmmm, 20fps in live view. I wonder how bad the blackout/stutter will be? Also really, really hope there is a hybrid OVF/EVF in the viewfinder to make using live view usable with long lenses.

Gah, still a @#$%^ wifi dongle! But the press release does indicate built-in wifi, gps and bluetooth...

Those AF improvements are very interesting, sounds like they didn’t just phone it in and maybe we’ll actually get a camera with autofocus on the same level as the other guys Also very interested in what live view looks like on this, it seems like they’re laying the foundation for the 1-series R body in this camera (20fps, almost edge-to-edge AF coverage, most likely tracking at least as good as the new R firmware, etc). Really wondering what that hole in the AF-ON button is for and how it’s going to help you to change AF points. Also, holy crap WiFi finally!

I'm wondering if the 28x they are referring to is the resolution of the iTTR colour metering sensor, which is currently a paltry 0.36MP. If it were 10.8MP that could finally mean their auto tracking would actually be very good and discrimination against bust backgrounds too.

I skipped 1DXII, very underwhelmed but maybe, just maybe this will tempt me back, sorely wanting to use my 500 f/4L IS II more, 5D4 gets sold on Monday leaving me without a Canon camera for the first time since 1996. If they have greatly improved AF along with the other changes looks good, but not if it's another 2MP res bump.
