I've found the camera can be picky about the USB cable being used. Any chance you have another one you could try?

GMPhotography wrote:
Well got through all the stuff as we always have to do . Now where my issue is is actually seeing the camera. Fresh battery and all on USB. Ive seen this a hundred times up to this point but not actually connecting not really. Clues

I did all the up front stuff so thats not it

The updater is kind of screwy too. It says on the left panel to connect the camera, but if you connect it before launching, it will say in the right that the camera is connected and you have to disconnect it. If you don't notice the guidance on the right, it will appear the camera isn't connected and it won't let you do anything.

Why doesn't Sony abandon this all together and allow firmware updates from the memory card?

Still issues. I will try again later but the best solution is like other systems is download updates to a card than put in camera and add a update from card deal. Seriously this Sony setup is not on a Professional level

Hmm. Make sure you check in the Security & Privacy section of System Preferences to make sure there isn't a block that needs to be allowed, it shows that on the Sony page I linked to.

I was expecting the worst, but it was pretty much exactly like updating the camera or my other Sony lenses.

Got my update to work on my laptop....but the installer kept hanging on my main machine. This is a bit bizarre considering my main machine is absolutely rock solid. Only times I reboot are for system updates...otherwise it operates 24/7, and I photo process, remote into work each day, game on it...no issues ever....but this software didn't like it for some reason. Hook up to laptop, and was good to go.

Guy - are you remembering to remove the SD cards before updating? (It's in the instructions)

I tried the SD cards as well. I'm running errands will get back on it soon. Something is just weird. I've done these updates more times than I can count. Hopefully find something to help us

Updated the lens on Mac 10.14.6. Only problem I had was play memories kept opening up while I was running the updater. Closing play memories resulted in it reopening a few seconds later. Ended just running with play memories in the background.

Although not listed, the firmware update fixed the focus advance with the bluetooth remote. Previously I would hit the +/- buttons and nothing would happen (it might update if you press in combination with af-on). Now the focus advance works properly without hitting any other buttons.

Updated on windows...and mistakenly left the memory cards in. I kind of hate to say it, but I didn't have any issues updating the Sigma lens.

Did a landscape shot comparison between the Sigma 14-24mm vs an older Olympus 4/3 Zuiko (not the newer micro 4/3) 7-14mm, at equivalent wide settings. 14mm for the Sigma and 7mm (=14mm in 35mm equivalence) for the Zuiko (with the Olympus EM-1 Mk2 camera body). Used f/8 for both. Again, it's just a one lens of each type comparison. The Zuiko 7-14mm is supposed to be quite good...not a dog. It's actually heavier than the Sigma. But when comparing the results, the Sigma is noticeably sharper in the center and the corners. Some of that may be the camera sensors, but I'm thinking the Sigma is just that much better. Yes, the Zuiko is an old lens. Still, worth doing the comparison. I like legacy glass as much as the next guy, but performance tops nostalgia.

I just got my 14-24 yesterday, and will attempt this. Like you, I am running Mojave ... we will see how this goes

I tried again to no avail. I did get the 24-70 today it’s the same size basically as the 14-24. I’ll start testing on Friday. Like to compare the two 24mm focal lengths

It looks like I'm getting the Aurora magnetic ND filter prototype next week for a quick test. I will update this thread with my impressions.

Luckily the Kase 6-stop ND I purchased from B&H Photo didn't break yet after mounting/un-mounting dozen of times.

Richard @rvh23 requested some crops comparing the Sigma 14-24/2.8 @21mm versus the Voigtlander 21/3.5 color-skopar, both at @f/7.1.

Here are the results:
(not corrected for vignetting or CA)

Center at f/7.1: Both are similar in resolution

Mid-zone at f/7.1: Sigma is noticeably better

Extreme corner at f/7.1: Sigma is noticeably better

The Voigtlander is a very good compact lens but honestly, for landscapes you can't do better than Sigma 14-24/2.8, CV 50/2 APO and 100-400 GM.

Thanks Fred, that's really helpful. I could probably live with the midzone, but not the corners. Looks like I will be keeping my Loxia for sunstars to complement the Sigma.

Agreed, the Sigma zoom is a remarkable lens. I was surprised to see that at f7.1 even my Loxia 21 can't quite match it for sharpness in the extreme corners.
Here's a comparison on A7r4 at 100%.

And that's probably focusing on the corners for the Loxia. If you focus on center, the difference is even bigger.
