That link is for the old Sigma DSLR zoom (for canon and nikon) and filter system, not the new DG DN lens.

I haven't needed to add the rectangular filter attachments, but certainly using the DG DN adapter with the round CPL+ND64 filter there is absolutely no vignetting over the whole zoom range.

Ah, thanks. That's great to hear.

To confirm, the filter kit is the same, i.e. the Nisi S5

Hi all,

Quick question, I recently purchased the Sigma 14-24 DG DN for my Sony and I, like many here, am impressed with the image quality.

I am a bit worried about the noise the lens makes when zooming from 14mm to around 20mm though. It is not a silent operation and does seem to make a slight grinding noise...is this normal? The quicker the movement the louder the noise. No matter how slow I turn the zoom ring the noise does not entirely dissapear. I would not have been as worried if the noise didn’t suddenly dissapear above 20mm....

I may be overreacting as I come from prime lenses only. I have avoided zooms for many reasons but thought I give the Sigma a try.

Any similar experiences?

Yes, the amazon link points to the right S5 kit for the DG DN lens if you want the system with CPL only rather than the combination CPL+ND64 that I mentioned. The amazon link shows the adapter alone is also available (in which case you wouldn't get the rectangular-filter attachment)

You are moving a lot of glass when zooming with this lens, so especially when zooming quickly, some low level friction noise is to be expected. The lens is maximally extended at the wide end which probably accounts for why you hear more noise there. I get that with my copy too. However when I turn very slowly, there is very little noise, even at the wide end.

Thank you for your reply. What you write makes sense and gives me some peace of mind Im really loving this lens so far and this was the only concern.

Now lets see if I will add another zoom with the launch of the 24-70 art.

Cheers!

Mine just arrived. Damn that thing is small ! I know that some consider this lens large and heavy, but my previous reference was the Nikon 14-24, so...

Seems very good, including at 24 2.8. Keeper.

Small and light for a f/2.8 ultra wide zoom was my first impression as well.
One single high IQ lens for architecture, landscapes and nightcapes.
Congrats on the new lens!

Next week I will get the Rear ND Filters Set from Haida. 125,- Euros for 4 filters are a fraction of what a 150mm filter system would cost. And the set should fit in the SD Cards compartment of my camera bag :-)

Germans: you will get a 15 Euros discount at the German Haida web store until Christmas.

I had a few wide-angle lenses in my 30+years of shooting and I see very strong field distortions.
All the bokeh talks have no meaning, it is a wide-angle lens, sharp at F5.6-11 and low distortion. That is must-have...

Thanks. Something interesting : after a few shots side by side with my Nikon 14-24, I can notice that the Sigma is about half a stop slower.

But definitely not with its original Haida Box. It's (unnecessary) huge.

I will probably build a new box for these filters using one of my 52mm B+W filter boxes.

Spirolino,

I look forward to hear your comments on their performance. I also think it would be a great choice if there is no negative impact on image quality. Please try to post a couple images with and without one of those filters, especially at the 14mm end of the zoom range. Thanks! Marc

I don't want to discourage anyone from using the Haida set but be aware that it's made with 0.05mm Scott glass and this thickness will influence (induce) field curvature for the wide range (14-18mm).
Even at f/8, corners will still be slightly out of focus when focusing at infinity (center). It will be better than using mount clip-on filters (1mm) but not as good as a gel filter. (0.02mm)
The only company currently developing thinner rear glass is Aurora but their set won't be available until Jan.

My plan is to do a thorough comparison between the Haida, Aurora and Lee filters (and maybe Nisi). I already have the Lee and Haida filters but wait until the Aurora are available.
I would test for sharpness/resolution, field curvature, corner sharpness, color casts / WB and handling. Is there anything else that would be interesting?

Just received my Sigma 14-24mm DN. Another day, another brand-new tilted/decentered $1k+ lens. Sigh. It's perfect at 14mm but the right edge gets progressively softer vs the left toward the longer end. These are at f/2.8:

And here are full-sized photos at 22mm, which appears to exhibit the worst of the asymmetry. The right edge sharpens up by around f/8:
22mm @ f/2.8
22mm @ f/4
22mm @ f/5.6
22mm @ f/8

Quite a few copies seem to behave like this - excellent at the wide end, and increasingly asymmetric towards the long end.

It took me four copies to find one that was fairly consistent across the whole zoom range (actually best at 18mm). But all four I tried were great by F6.3, and I would say only the worst of those four was as asymmetric as yours seems to be. I would try another one if possible. Several FM members have reported receiving copies that were well centered across the whole range first try.

It seems this sort of variability plagues most, if not all zooms.

Thanks. I'm actually going to roll the device and send it in to C.R.I.S. for an authorized Sigma USA warranty service and see if they can adjust the lens to correct the issue. I'll report back my results, hopefully in a week or two. If they're unable to correct the issue then I'll be sending it back to the dealer for a replacement.
