I wonder how thick the Haida glass will be.

I just received the new Aurora prototype (0.2mm glass thickness) and it has no detectable effect on field curvature even at 14mm and f/2.8 (which would be the most visible)
That's great news as at least with Aurora, the filters will work without any detrimental effect to IQ. The glass is also high IQ with pretty minimal color cast.
The glass is very thin and therefore will have an aluminum framing around it for easy and safe installation. They are shooting for January 2020 release and will offer up to 16-stops of ND effect.

1mm is way too thick. Even 0.5mm is still too much and it will change field curvature is a big way towards the wide range. (out of focus corners)
Gel filters are ~0.1mm and the new Aurora rear filters are 0.2mm.

If i know this before. I should bring some vernier there. I hope i can see final Aurora product soon. I’m glad that many company will release rear type filter for this lens. Normally i can see only self cut gel type. I’m sure ti will sell very well.

Beautiful lens. I'm blown away by its performance wide open.

First shot, in the front yard. Normally I'd expect to see massive fringing of the branches against the sky, but it's minimal with this lens. And the focus plane looks to be pretty flat too.

Here's a full size version if anyone's curious
NOTE - that's not smearing at the top of the trees - it was just windy.

Thanks a lot for this image, that is for me the best way to know beforehand what to expect from lens (better then reviews or charts). And wow especially on the bottom of the trees: super sharp, my 24-70mm GM doens't even come close (Sigma 24-70mm DG DN super tempting now).

And @ this thread, was gonna wait long time to buy this Sigma, cause it's quite expensive (1529 euro with the rare drop to 1417 euro). Of course black friday happens. -10%.

My favorite shop matched the price, and who am I to resist this Sigma lens? I own 14-24mm nikon, wanted the DSLR Sigma, but while better, i was not convinced (especially for 1400 euro), but this E-mount lens, has me convinced fully. Plus i love UWA, and while the GM is great, no copy has even sharpness so far on flickr or cameralabs at F8 and 35mm (rest is very sharp) but that kills the purpose of lens imo: combining 16-24mm, with a bit more tight framing 35mm. So this sigma is jsut better imo (if it performans like FM's copy), plus cheaper. So 1371 euro including taxes Sigma 14-24mm DG DN, here i come.

Also got the 55mm Sony Zeiss, while some ppl here prefer the 50mm F1.4 (someday i will get it), the zeiss just seems to usefull (small, always with you on travel), sharp wide open, more then decent rendering and correction of CA and rest. Not perfect, but Sharp corners at infinity in both corners at F1.8 are something that convince me a lot, and at cameralabs this lens does it. It also seems to have low copy variation, all image i see so far are very sharp. 650 euro (very fair i think compared to old 999 euro). The used copy's go for same or only slightly lower.

Now i'm debating 24-105mm F4, 24-70mm GM (wich I own now), and Sigma 24-70mm. At the moment, my corner sharpness at F8, 24mm, is a hit and miss with the gmaster, i will do more tests to see if rolling shutter, IBIS or something else is affecting sharpness, that 24mm is very important for me.

But hopefully not to much slowed down by Black friday, i can't wait for my Sigma 14-24mm art.

For those looking to use a night pollution filter with the Sigma 14-24, the Optolong L-Pro that pops over the Sony E-mount sensor induces field curvature in the periphery. Please post if you know of any other alternatives.

I am trying to decide whether I should get this lens for my A7R III. Has anyone compared the wide end to an adapted irix 15mm f2.4. I will be using the lens at f5.6 to f16 appertures.

I mainly shoot portraits, weddings and engagements. I also do landscapes and cityscapes as a hobby.

The option for me is:

1. Irix 15 f4 adapted to sony (mf does not bother me at this focal length and 1mm tighter fl wont kill me)

And a 24 1.4 gm which is good for low light and has great sharpness.

2. Sigma 14-24 2.8 dg dn

Which would option would you recommend ill probably add the new 35 1.8 on top of both combinations.

I am worried aboout expensive filter system and dont really trust the new rear filter systems.

Edit: here is a video comparing the irix to some of the other popular lenses. Skip to 10:30

If you're looking at the Irix, you might want to look at the Laowa 15mm f/2 as well.

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your response.

The leowa will cost me double the price irix, I am not sure if centre and corner sharpness upgrade at appertures 5.6-f16 will be worthwhile. I currently have a irix 11mm f4 which I am thinking about selling as I find it too wide.

i guess my real question is can the irix 15mm f2.4 with sigma 14-24 2.8 dg dn , 16-35 gm, 14-24 2.8 dg dn on a 42/45mp body when stopped down to f5.6-f16

In the video link I posted, none of these lenses are in the comparison unfortunately. Instead of the leowa, maybe the samyang 14mm xp 2.4 will be sharper? it was ahead of the zeiss and nikon 14-24 in the comparison video.

You can get the lens for 1110 euro (tax included) in Singapore.

Just a suggestion. The Laowa is on sale through tomorrow and it's comparable in price to the Blasckstone version of the Irix. It's a lot smaller and lighter. You don't get any EXIF, but you don't have to adapt either. The Laowa takes 72mm (vs. 95mm) filters as well, which is nice.

I've never used the Irix, but it looks almost as large as my ZE 15. I've never had much luck with Samyang, as I can never seem to get a centered one. But I think I've heard good things about it. I think there was a post showing it was very sharp into the corners even wide open. I'm not 100% sure that is the lens I remember in that comparison though.

While I can't seem to part with my ZE 15, I find myself always using the Laowa. I shoot mainly landscapes.

It's great having so many options. The Sigma 14-24 is tempting for me to round out my AF zoom kit. I already have the Sony 24-105 and 100-400 (and 1.4 TC.) I could have 14-560mm covered in 3 lenses.

Maybe look in to the Voigtlander 15mm, should be ok 5.6-f11

If you pixel peep a lot, the Sigma 14-24 dgdn has merit, imo

For me the 14-24, can replace 3-4 primes easily for landscape use

Thanks for the response.

I agree the irix 15mm 95mm filter thread is an issue, I have an irix 11mm which has no front end filter screw on, so that is even worse. The leowa definitely has my interest now, the 72mm screw on filter hes peaked my interest. Sharpness across the frame is much better than the irix 15mm, however, the irix is noticeably sharper in the centre.

Sigma 14-24 is a great option, but the filter system is really pushing me away from the lens, also the weight is another concern.

How does the 14-24 28 compare to the laowa 15mm and 24mm gm?

For landscape, I prefer more even sharpness across the frame. The CV 15 is nice too, better sunstars if you are in to that sort of thing. But it's more picky about filter thickness and to many have the petals cut off to give more filter options (like the Lee Seven5 system.) Just some things to think about. I do wish the Laowa had electronic contacts and supported EXIF. But I've gotten pretty good about adding the info later in post. It's not like I would get a 15mm shot confused with any other of my adapted manual lenses.

The other options have some level of pain for using filters....and once you go down that path, it seems like the Sigma 14-24 should get serious consideration.

I really do not use filters a lot, there will be some rear glass nd filters coming out soon i think

Never had the Laowa 15, images ive seen look really good!

24gm is a really good lens, the 14-24 at f4-f11 , close call, pixel peeping to see differences, imo

At f4 and wider, the 24gm will have a slight edge, would really need to use the lens wide open to see difference, imo

Bokeh is smooth on the 24gm, imo

All this is very subjective and would take some pixel peeping to see a lot of the differences i think

My copy of the 14-24 (well centered) is very close to my 24GM. The 24GM wins, but it's only barely noticeable at 100% view while pixel peeping. Fred's 14-24 was slightly sharper than his 24GM.

You mentioned the rear filters. I tried a Lee 4-stop gel ND sheet that I cut to size and it did not appear to induce field curvature in my 14-24. Fred's results were the same as mine. I haven't tried a filter set or a CPL.

I tested my Voigtlander 15mm against my Sigma 14-24 @ 15mm and the Sigma won easily at all apertures. I tested on the A7R3. My VC15 is a decent lens, but not great. My Sigma is great.
