Thank you to ColinF, AGeoJO, arbitrage, galenpass, 149113, and buffalowolff for the feedback, I appreciate it. The summation so far seems to indicate yes, I can carry the big lens (I use the Peak Design slide, maybe the big one would work for the 600mm GM) with some obvious care combined with keeping a grip on the lens foot as a backup. I do that often with my 100-400mm as well via the RRS foot I swapped in. And I like the clever 3d printed piece to improve the grip comfort, well done! I also see shorter hoods are popular among users in this forum, which might help to reduce the overall length / banging around when on a strap. Even the 100-400 seems somewhat long to me when carrying it on a shoulder strap and the lens barrel extends down with hood in place.
Thanks again for both the info and the smile-inducing images all of you post here. Location, patience, and skill! Oh, and the gear. . .

Spent the day shooting ducks in flight yesterday. Getting to know/love my Sony again after a couple months doing a lot of Canon R5 shooting...you know, new toy syndrome.....March 4th will bring more new-toy overload
Holy CRAP! What great images!!! What body did you use? Also are you using a tripod or hand holding for these pics?
Do you have a link to the lens hood you are using?
All images were with A9II and all handheld.
My short hood for the 600GM is 3D printed by FM member @buffalowolff
If you message him he may be able to print/sell you one.
Snow bunts (from late last year). Each year a small number winter on a beach with a mix of shingle and dunes, I think the most there this season was 4.
My two resident hummers...one resides in my front yard and the other in the backyard....they are very territorial over their winter feeding grounds. I have now seen a female starting to collect fluffy nesting material. They start to breed as early as February but our recent blast of Arctic air has probably given them some pause.
