I went to this site to photograph something else but I couldn’t get any meaningful images of that target that day. This egret gave me a consolation price ...

I thought you sold the A7RIV, Geoff.
I had it listed for sale and then pulled the listing. I had a local buyer lined up and he had to delay for now. He may still want to buy it in a month or so and I will probably let it go then. But for now I've just been trying to use it a bit more and see if I find a reason to keep it.

Yeah, we all need to raise funds for that 50MP A9III
So you feel that the best camera for the 600GM is actually the A9?
I am plotting to invest in the 600f4 after seeing one in the wild. A fellow birder uses one, and my scare of the size has abated, he used it without the hood that day. I would prefer a 45mp body, but 61mp is a bit overkill, so thinking about the A9.
I downloaded the raw files from froknows, both the A9+600gm and the A9+200-600gm, and despite all I read, the 600GM is clearly in a league of its own. You can easily zoom in to 100%, and it still looks like a credible image. I am really impressed with the resolving power of the 600GM, but it remains the question whether you need more pixels than the 24mp of the A9 to show that.

I feel that I'm most confident not to miss a shot when I'm using the A9/A9II. I also find that just like the 200-600, I'm usually happier adding an extra TC factor to the lens on the A9 to make up for the majority of the ~1.6x pixel advantage of the A7RIV. I find that by the time I try to use 1200mm on the A7RIV and use crop mode I'm too far away and things fall apart. If I can fill a full frame image then I'd rather just have 24MPs anyways over 45-61. I think my ideal would be mid-30s. I'm really hoping A9III is mid-30s. But I guess if it has A9 AF then I may be okay with 40-50??
So I really only like using 840mm on the A7RIV and in that case I'd rather just shoot 1200mm on the A9. However, if you are after making big prints then shooting the same shot with A7RIV vs A9II (where you aren't reaching out with the crop mode/pixels) makes sense.
Thanks!
The whole point of adding the 600GM to the D500+500PF, is of course reach. But reading that the 600GM works very well with the 2xtc has caught my attention. It will mean that with the 24mp A9, I either shoot with the 1.4tc or 2xtc all the time, or I would crop to a much smaller file size than with the D500.
It's good to know that both tc options work without much (if any) loss of IQ
