I was walking to my mailbox yesterday and looked over into the forest at an old snag as I always do in the hopes of seeing an owl. No owl as per usual, but my heart skipped a beat when I saw this Red-tailed Hawk as it was having its lunch. I ran back home and grabbed my camera, and fortunately the bird was still there when I returned.
I always find them to be very shy, skittish birds, and true to form, it flew off with its prey a couple seconds later.

I just received the hood and cap. I had been using the lens without the Sony hood and it was a bit unbalanced ( I don't use a grip), with the new hood it's much better. I was also getting too many droplets from wet foliage, this should help a lot, aside from added protection from twigs.
Thank you very much, Geoff! I am enjoying the high MP of the A7r IV and the AF is good enough for harriers, at least most of them time. I can either get a personal blind to let the birds to fly by closer or use the 2X next week when I am going back there. This place is about 2-hour drive one-way from me but it seems to be rewarding.
Your images are always exquisite and they make Sony gear look good . We all know it is the person behind the camera that counts more .
I was out shooting some harrier actions last Friday. Judging by the distance, I knew that it would be tough to get great images from this spot. But what the heck... I only used my A7r IV that has become my camera of choice lately in the last 3 months or so after the FW upgrade. I believe the AF performance is just fine and boy, do I love the cropping ability of the 61MP sensor! I am dead serious that my A9 II hasn't seen any action in the last 2-3 months.
These two images are just to show what that sensor can do in terms of cropping...

A very shy American kestrel taken from inside the car at a wildlife area. As soon as I got out the car, it flew away although I did it very gingerly. There was another one further down the road, and the same thing happened. About as close as I could get and this is a big crop, too even at 1,200mm. Oh, well I will try again sometime and I will use my A7r IV as well next time.

Thanks Joshua, the atlantic had a heavy swell that AM! Agree the reach on the A7R4 would be great for your perched kestrel image, lovely as it is on the A9ii.
