Is anyone still waiting on a pre-order for the 600GM? Just curious what supply might be like. I know the 400GM was hard to get, decent wait time up until the 600GM announcement which seemed to ease demand and now a number of camera stores in Canada have a 400GM just sitting in stock for a month or so.
Trying out a new camera today but using the same target . This is probably the most detailed image of a flying owl in the last 3-4 years of photographing them. It got close in details of a stationary owl on my screen. I am including a crop of that image below. Too bad, the June bug was not in critical focus. But you can see shadows from the eyelashes...
Folks, used A7Riv with 600 GM + 2X TC and it appears to focus and tracking as expected. One pic is tracking in action around 800 ft away and other one is static at 650 feet. Both shots were taken by friend of mine while I was away for restroom break so all good or bad credits goes to him. -
Great images, everyone! The more I use the lens, the more I like, no, more like, I love it! I am planning of going to Ecuador at the end of October and yes, this lens will be my main one. I will be taking a zoom in addition to it. I am not sure whether I should take the GM 100-400mm or the G 200-600mm. I will have time to think about it.
@ke3vg Mukesh, the cormorants in your neck of the wood are seemingly quite aggressive in pursuing their meal, huh?

So envious. Given the restrictions and inherent hassle of travelling with lots of camera gear, I would say the logical choice would be to take the smaller & lighter 100-400 in addition to the 600 f/4. It would also offer a shorter MFD than the 200-600 for frogs and such .
Yeah, I'm mostly interested in how the overlapping focal lengths compare. As far as distance to subject...30-40 feet would be fine....anything would be better than nothing.
I'd appreciate any test you come up with and no worries if you don't get around to it. I always tell myself I'm going to test things and then always find something better to do
I have some attraction to the 400/2.8 end but my main attraction to the 400 over 600 is having a much smaller package to shoot 560 and 800 with. I used a 600/4 IS II for many years as my main lens and I just got tired of the large size out in the field and traveling with it. The weight is obviously improved with the Sony over my older Canon but the size hasn't changed at all. That is what is ever drawing me to a 400/2.8 option instead....Show more →

What were your impressions of the comparison? Just looking at the posted jpegs it looks like 600GM has a noticeable (but maybe not significant) advantage vs 560 on the 400GM. But at 800mm the 400GM almost looks slightly better which is odd.

Geoff, please, keep in mind that this shots were taken with A7RiV from the same distance, so images taken with longer focal length does have higher MPX resolution of the subject, which would give impression of sharp images. I have taken 2 sets of each focal length so please, examine the raw files and make conclusion based on that.
For the question of my impression, I am impressed with both lens equally, with their performance with both TC, coming from Nikon land, this is amazing. I have kept the both lens for now because I think 400 is great lens for low light and travel so it has use in my style of photography, the 600 is mostly used at Conowingo dam for Eagle BIF shots, tried A7Riv with 600 and 2X TC and was pretty impressed with the tracking performance but it does need more testing before I declare the victory here.
You would not go wrong with any of the lens!
