p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The 24-105 is a remarkable lens!

When I moved to Sony this year, I had my doubts that the 24-105 would impress. I figured it would be a lens that I carried simply for focal range utility, not for the results it produced.

How wrong I was!

I backpack and travel pretty frequently, and this lens is my workhorse. I am finding that 24mm is wide enough for just about every situation I've come up against, and 105 at f4 produces gorgeous bokeh for close up flower shots and portraits. The OIS and IBIS work very well together, enabling some nice slow shutter shots when hiking as well. At closed apertures it even produces a pleasing sunstar!

Auto focus is fast, the build quality is great, and I have no complaints about this lens. A testament to how much I enjoy using it...I picked up a 16-35GM to flesh out my backpacking setup (16-35, 24-105, 100-400) and find that I am rarely reaching for the 16-35 because the 24-105 does such a fine job in most scenarios.

If you are on the fence about this lens, I'd say it's worth every penny. Below is a sampling of pictures I've taken with it this year.

Just picked this up a while ago, similar to you for a way to reduce the number of lenses I need to bring with when travelling and backpacking. I've been quite impressed with it as well and would highly recommend. Feels like a GM lens at a G price.

Also, absolutely gorgeous set of images. Love the one of the sun coming through the trees especially.

Have to agree Scott. Just at my age - I "prefer" an APS-C Sony for backpacking in the mountains

It doesn’t get talked about a lot here, but I agree that the 24-105G is a quality lens. I use it for travel, landscapes, and as a walk around.

Without hyperbole, I absolutely agree. I can find no fault with it that would make me distinguish it from my GMs, aside from build materials (which I don't find flimsy or concerning in the least).

I recently sold this lens and have the Tamron now, but I fully agree that it's an excellent lens. My last outing with it was the Inca Trail in Peru, and it performed fantastically. I had one hell of a photo book with 90% of the images coming from this lens

It is an excellent lens. The IQ is very good for a zoom and is my go to lens for hiking in the mountains etc.

Are you not missing those extra 30mm on the long end?

At times I do, but I found that most of my shots while hiking were <75mm. I definitely miss the bokeh and build quality of it, but I felt most of the time I was carrying more than I needed. I went back with the Tamron because I recently got the 17-28 and wanted to share filters with that and my 24 GM.

I'm waiting to see if Tamron comes out with a telephoto soon, otherwise I'll be getting the 100-400 GM for my telephoto.

Same reasoning here but opposite direction. All of my lenses share a common 77mm thread which has been lovely. Typically just bring the Batis 18 and 24-105 hiking. I'll add in the rok24/1.4 when there's good astro opportunities, and the 100-400 if I have a car. Too big/heavy for me for backpacking trips though.

I had that exact setup (Batis 18 and 24-105) and man, that's such a good pair!

Another vote for the 24-105. Any aperture. Any focal length. Extremely versatile and predictable.

I swtiched out the Tamron for the 24-105 too, and love the improved range on both ends, smooth bokeh, flare resistance, sunstars and even sharpness over the Tamron. Performs like a freak: sharp corner to corner from wide open.

Agreed, the 24-105/4 is crazy versatile. I could probably do all my shooting on it. The 16-35GM and 24-105 produced probably 90% of my landscape shots when I was in Germany this year.

I did like my 24-105 but like new Tamron 28-75 better. IMO it has much better colours, contrast, sharpness and rendering. Also it is 2.8 lens. It's more fun to use for street photography. For landscapes 24-105 would be better choice though.

Yep, that was my logic as well. The 24-105 and 100-400 conveniently share 77mm filters. If you buy 82mm filters, you can use on all 3 zooms.

I do not like to throw cold water on anyones thread or lens that they like but I returned mine due to a lack of color, rendering and pop.

I had high hopes I mean extra reach, less bulk/weight and $$$ and was looking forward to selling my 24-70GM and even listed it on eBay.

Sadly compared to my GM zooms and GM, Voigtlander and Zeiss Primes it did not compare so I kept my 24-70GM and returned the 24-105 G.

Despite being sharp many people have referred to this lens as being flat and lacking character.

There is no free lunch and are reasons why GM's and others cost twice as much.

No problem, your experience doesn't really take anything away from other peoples experience with the lens. I own a number of gm lenses and primes and it isn't as good as those but in fairness, comparing a zoom to a prime is a little unfair. The zoom is a balance of quality and convenience. For instance, the 24-105 takes far better images @105 compared to the 24 gm 1.4. But you wouldn't expect anything else.

The GM zooms tend to have better micro contrast but, again, the 24-105 does well and even better than the 24-70 at the long end compared to the 24-70. It's all about balance. For a general purpose 24-105, it is a very good lens

I fully agree that the 24-105G is a very good and versatile lens but hardly remarkable. I should have been more specific as to why I did not like it.

I am very picky and the lens is just not for me, I do not even like to use my 24-70GM and seldom use it for serious stuff but more walk around and documenting type work.

Not that the 24-70GM is not capable of stunning excellent images but I greatly prefer my 35 1.4 Distagon, 50 1.4 Planar, 85 GM, 100 STF or CV110 in that FL range because I want the absolute best I can get.

I do think when the series II GM lenses come about down the road that the 24-70GM will likely be the first one they release in a zoom if for no other reason than it is weaker on the long end.
