The copy I tested (on a 24MP sensor with AA) is certainly soft at F2.8, not only at close range.
It sharpened up nicely when stopping down though.

Center of the image at a distance of approx. 15m:

F5.6

At infinity I notice that it's sharper, F2.8 again:

That doesn’t look good at all. From 15m one should be able to discern the bricks surface texture. I suggest to consider returning for a replacement.

I got another copy a couple of days ago and it has been slowly growing on me. It appears a bit sharper than the first one I tried.

These are looking really good, you have a keeper there.

So Sigma is not only trying to outdo Sony on rendering, but also on lens variance. Good job there

Seriously, Fred, knock it off! I have enough lenses! 😊

I'm not even a "bokeh" guy, but this thing is just buttery.

No CA, this lens is a true APO!

Be careful with that little guy with his tongue out, he’s trying to steal the show

A few more of the girls at various distances under harsh lighting. The Sigma can smooth the harshness even at f/2.8.

Stopped by Glazers here in Seattle today since I was driving by anyways and no 45/2.8 Sigma to be found, though the had all the other FE mount Sigma lenses in the Sony case. Likely end of Sept. to make it to brick and mortar (or in this case glass and steel) stores.

Had my 45/2.8 AI-P with me and was curious how the two would compare.
The two are likely about the same size and weight when including the F to FE adapter.

I always found that I liked the mid-distance wide open rendering of the 45/2.8 AI-P and at f/5.6 it had all the sharpness my D800 could want at far distances for landscapes. Not good pointing it into the sun though.

Fred is in great danger too, once he becomes accustomed to this, he’ll want to add the 100 STF too... he he...

Fred these are really nice pictures!
But not any idea of lens sharpness.
Good bokeh, some vignetting but what about sharpness.
Couldn't you post some full resolution samples?

Hope Sigma is not reading this thread. They will not believe there are AFC issues

Fred, I am always amazed by the consistent look of your photos and the skin tones in particular. Is there a tutorial?

On this page, two of the image samples also show the area of focus (eyes) at 1:1 magnification:

Here is another sample:
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1608234/3#14941715

Generally, the lens is sharp at 1.5m and longer distances. It's sharp enough at 1m and not very sharp at MFD. (needs some stopping down)

I compared it to one of the sharpest 50mm lens at center (FE 50/1.4) and it did well starting starting at 1.5m in comparison:

But, Fred... What about sharpness at long distance and small apertures?

Hi Enri,
Did you see the 1:1 crops at infinity?

I may have bought this. Lol

It says pending at focus camera but they closed all weekend. Maybe I’ll know tomorrow

I’m sure we will see a firmware fix. Sigma is pretty good about updates

What do folks think about the Sigma vs the Sony 35 2.8? I've been looking for that comparison since the Sigma 45 was announced.

I have an A73, the Sony 35 1.4, and the Sony 24-105, and looking for a compact AF to have an option that's as small as possible. My wife and I are expecting our first child any day now (we're due date plus 5 days as I write this). I got the 35 1.4 for dimly lit family shots and other nightlife (and love it!). The two lenses I have right now are a little excessive in size for a day to day walk-around though.

I've owned the FE 35/2.8 ZA for many years and loved its portability. However, even though it's perhaps sharper than the Sigma 45/2.8, rendering is way harsher imo.
