I'm not sure what to think. So far it seems somewhat better than before the firmware update.
Might it yield different results with different bodies? I use an A7III. I can't remember what the AF emphasis was set to (AF vs Balanced didn't seem to make a difference).
The picture below was taken in a dimly lit bar at very close distance - from across a small table. AF-C, F/3.2, 1/40s:

This is where I think it slightly missed the eye, despite the high shutter speed (1/500), but it still is better than what I used to get before the update:

I confess that after looking at that review I clicked on the similar review for the new Nikkor Z 35mm f/1.8 S--and the "image resolution" results for the Nikkor made me think that the resolution of the Sigma lens was just sorta-kinda OK. Then I looked at the similar test for the Zony 55, a lens that I've long thought was sharp enough for my needs. The Sigma is clearly better than just OK.

Well crap, the updater doesn't work on Catalina and I tried to run it on my work PC (surprised our security measures even allowed me to run an .exe) but the updater doesn't recognize the camera for some reason. Are there any workarounds?

Ah, I got it, didn't move the files to a new folder. Was able to sub the Sony file with the Sigma file, but it still gets hung up by the malicious software check, even if opening with right click.
Lemme guess - Windows 10? I swear Defender acts just like a virus. Have to go through all these hoops to disable it and it'll always reactivate itself. Ugh.
Hope it works for you.

Final update, had to go to security settings to allow the software to run, and it finally worked! Thanks!
Got it to work on OSX Catalina, actually, thanks to darrellc's ninja jack. My work computer is Win 10 though, couldn't even get it to recognize the camera.
I'm very happy with this lens so far after one month. I like the variablity of the lens, close up photos with smooth bokeh wide open, little softness in close distances and stellar sharpness in other distances, especially on F4-5.6.
About autofocus, I have slightly different experience. So far I have zero problems with AF-C in good lightning conditions, on the other hand, I have many autofocus misses in low light conditions, no matter if I'm shooting in AF-C or AF-S mode.

Is that AF-C with or without Eye AF? I am having no luck with AF-C with Eye AF in daylight (cloudy, haven't had the weather to test high contrast sunlight). I wonder if disabling Eye AF helps, as in the case of earlier firmware versions of the Samyang 85/1.4.

The Sigma 45mm is supposed to have “weather sealed construction” but today I found a couple of big dust pieces in the middle of the lens that won’t dislodge despite a bit of shaking. Really annoying as it’s smack in the middle of the lens. I don’t remember it being there when I got the lens a few months ago. Is this an indication of something wrong with the sealing of this lens?
Anyone else has this issue? I wonder if I should send it in just to check to make sure there’s nothing wrong with the sealing?

No indication of anything, IMO. Weather sealing does not prevent dust from entering the lens in my experience. In fact every lens I own has collected dust. A little dust in the middle of the lens I have not found to have any impact on IQ.

I think you misunderstood something. The Sigma 45mm is NOT weathersealed. It only has a rubber gasket at the mount:
"The mount features a special sealing to make the lens an excellent choice in a wide variety of conditions."

It is AF-C with Eye AF enabled. When there is enough light, I have no problems with autofocus. Tested many times on my running children
