For anyone looking for a firmware fix, not sure if that's even possible. This was several pages back, but bears repeating. Bold text added by me...

Thanks for the detailed post. So I guess I'm thinking that, if the AF-C issue is on the Sony end, we may never see a fix for it, at least not in firmware. We all know how Sony doesn't really do those. Well... they do, but it means buying a newer body.
We may just have to live with it?

(...) At close distance, sigma 45mm's rendering instantly remind me of 58G. My relationship with 58G is growing, like this sigma, focus with PDAF is tricky with this lens, so even with D850, its AF results is not consistent. NO PDAF can deal with this kind of lenses, their SA screw phase detection up. (That is why I have doubt either Sony or Sigma can fix this 45mm AFC issue unless Sony offer hybrid focus in AFC like Z does, though for me personally, I will be happy using it just AFS only.
Do you believe they put in the market a lens not properly working knowing that and without informing customers? I’m quite sure it is just a matter of fine tuning some software piece.
The lens works just fine. The source of the issue is that Sony uses PDAF exclusively in AF-C, which struggles to lock focus in the presence of SA. Being that the lens was designed to *not* correct for SA, PDAF will continue to struggle, and there's nothing a firmware fix on the Sigma end can do about it. If Sony, on the other hand, offered the firmware fix of a hybrid (or selectable) CDAF/PDAF in AF-C, it would likely help immensely, but we all know Sony is not big on those.

'This is not a defect but a product specification. This product is designed intentionally to keep slight spherical aberration to achieve a unique representation performance especially in close-up position, and the symptom pointed out by this customer seems to be due to this reason.
In this situation, we recommend to use AF-S mode or adjust aperture 1-2 stop close down to improve focus accuracy. Hope this explanation helps and clarifies his concerns'
Based on this, it seems highly unlikely they will release a firmware update to address this.

Do you have a source for this or Sigma Japan answered you directly?

So, did they include that "product specification" (about AF limitations) in the sales materials and the manual?
CV 40/2.8 feels a bit similar to this lens and I really like that lens too but usability suffers from having to use a helicoid on adapter for focusing. I'd sure like a similar lens with proper focusing helicoid too and would have bought one if available.
Anyway, I'm enjoying the Sigma a lot and haven't had much trouble with the AF. I also use it at MF quite a bit when shooting at around MFD.

Was just thinking how much I'd love a lens like this from CV. Preferably in a similar size and 90mm, would be amazing.
