We were just in our regular clothes on land, and just not used to the colder temperatures yet. Being unable many times to step into the water to "get the shot", I will bring boots or waders next time.

Seriously I thought you and Geoff had the photography float blinds. I love the idea behind them, and you are in a perfect place. Where I am I couldn't concentrate on photography for worry of snapping turtles .

Actually, we're not in a great place for floating blinds, as they require bodies of water which are evenly shallow, and a depth just right for having your feet touch the bottom for control. It can be so easily too shallow or too deep. If you don't have contact with the bottom, you can be swept away by the slightest wind. I've thought about making one, but it just wouldn't work here.
Also, they place the camera & lens well above the surface of the water, and we want to be lower than that. The exception would be a more distant bird, where the height above the water is less of a problem.
Being able to hand-hold the a9 & 200-600 combo 1" above the ground and use the tilt-screen is great!

Yes, so much so, that I had to remove the battery grip off the A9 in order to get that last few fractions of an inch lower
Once you take waterfowl shots with this method there is no going back to anything else. Kayaking is way too high and knee-pod position is also. Unless the duck is far enough away to fake it a bit.

As age creeps up, you will learn getting up from even a sitting position with your gear in hand can be a handful.

Turn the camera upside down and you can leave the grip on it.

That would be a good idea except I need access to my shutter button and AF-On button. Otherwise that would work.
The way Colin and I do it these days is place a small Frisbee on the ground, lens foot on the frisbee and then flip screen pulled out. I then just use a crouched position and rotate with the Frisbee or add a little tilt as needed to frame the duck.

Major kudos for Sony giving us yet another zoom that can take the 1.4TC so well.

Seen just about an hour ago - the elusive and shy Varied Thrush!
This was taken in a very dark forest, so I knew when shooting it I was in for some serious noise and editing. Hand held with the a9 and 200-600, manual with auto ISO; f/6.3; 1/60 sec; ISO 6400 (my cap) @ 600mm.
The first few shots at about 1/200 sec were underexposed, so I had to just keep dropping the shutter speed lower and lower, to speeds that I normally never visit hand-held, but, it polished up not too terribly.
