p.5 #1 · CV Nokton Aspherical VM 75mm f/1.5 First Impressions

Have used it a little more in the last days and had a little more time to think about my results. It is indeed a very good landscape lens stopped down and has superior contrast, flare resistance and sunstars. Since a Leica Summarit 2.5/75 weights as much and the Loxia 2.4/85 a lot more this has to be seen as an achievement.

I have been less happy with my portraits. For central compositions results are very good but even when I am a little off-center I need to stop down to f2 for good sharpness and to f2.8 (possibly f2.4 haven't tested that) for rule of thirds placement of a face which I did not expect. To figure out if this is inherent in the design or caused by the stack I hope that Genji maybe with support from David can replicate our test setup at portrait distance. Again: it is a 350g lens so the need to stop down some doesn‘t make it useless for portraits but since it is a $1k lens I would have wished for more and I am curious how the 7A f1.25 will compare for portraits.

I just wish there was a local place for me to try it. I'd love to compare it on my stock and modded A7rII's.

Many good options at 75mm these days, but I think there are two size classes. All the Leica M lenses are fairly expensive except the Leica M 75 f/2.4, which can be had for about the same price as the CV 75 f/1.5 if you buy used and wait for a

David texted me yesterday about doing the test and naturally I agreed. Now we just have to settle on when and where to meet.

I’m raising money for it. I’m in need of something longer this sounds pretty solid. I really did like my Leica summarit 2.4 but this is 1.5 and I think it will be nicer to focus and such. Rendering looks very nice as well.

I've compared the CV 75/1.5 to the CV 65/2 APO at infinity and was surprised by the results since I was told the former would not perform well at long distance. (We already know the 65/2 is a reference lens in terms of resolution and contrast at all distances)

At f/2.8, it matches the 65/2 at center and at f/4 it matches its mid-field. (For those who know the 65/2, this is outstanding)
The very extreme corners never get as good as the 65's but they look similar at f/5.6. The 75/1.5 is a great landscape lens but I really like

Fred: at center, at f2.8, what other lenses you have tested recently match the 65/2 CV? I am very surprised to hear the 75/1.5 is as sharp as the 65/2. Great to hear, could be the mark of a real Voigtlander Classic. Thanks!

Also, I’m in a pretty close suburb so I will be testing for field curvature with the M10p on Monday from the roof of a high rise.

A little off topic.
Is the Zeiss Loxia line still alive? The most recent spec sheet, for the Loxia 25/2.4, is dated 12/17 (European style), i.e. December 2017. Is Cosina going it alone now, with more capacity for Voigtländer lenses? They look to be churning out one great lens after another.

On topic, I hope for an E mount 75/1.5 Nokton.

To CV's offerings. I'm surprised they haven't release a 90mm other than the APO-Lanthar. 75mm pairs nicely with 35 and 40mm lenses. As a 50 guy, it's a bit too close.

Yea I’m 12,21,50 so yes a 40 would gap better with this 75 . I’ve bought and sold the 50 before and bought it back over the 40. Just like the 50 better

I still have my Sony AF 135 so I’m not left in the cold

Ah, of course. 75/2.5, 75/1.8, 75/1.5, and 90/3.5. I should have been able to figure that out!

I totally agree that the lack of a 90mm lens in CV’s M-mount line-up is difficult to explain. The Australian CV distributor told me recently that Cosina regularly solicits input from their international distributors about potential new lens designs so I’ll ask about the lack of a new 90mm.

I’ve been a 50 guy myself for a long time, supplementing the 50 with a 28 and a 90 on either side. But recently I started to try the 35/75/135 combo.

Has anyone had the time to compare the 75/1.5 vs the 85/1.4GM? Looks like a lot of us are A7 guys more so than M noun users, so I think it’s a fruitful discussion.

I’d like to see resolution wide open and bokeh characteristics at portrait distance (half body shot or full baby shot (lol, to all the new dad setups out here)).

I can shoot the lens alignment board test shot again with them both, and my flower/console table bokeh test if any interest looms here.

It would be cool to compare it to the GM 85/1.4...Thanks for the suggestion.

Just started a review here. It's in progress...So many lenses to test...so little time.

Been following the review, glad to see someone spend so much time thoroughly going through the paces on this lens.

Here’s a quick comparo of the 85GM and the CV75/1.5, photo of the lensalign chart, A7r3, metabones adapter for the CV75/1.5, center frame, best of 3-5 manual focus and AF, first wide open at 100 iso, then at f/4. tripod mounted, delayed shutter.

The photo was captured from about 8 feet away in natural light with a Profoto a1x in continuous light mode from 4 ft camera diagonal back right. I kept the distance the same between the two lenses and 4 shots, for better or worse.

On a Retina display looking at the raw files, the CV75 is as sharp wide open or possibly sharper. Hard to tell. It also shows less CA. With the 85GM, I’m not sure if the a7r3 possibly effects the shot with CA correction in-camera. Regardless, the CV shows less CA.

At f/4, it’s a toss up, but both of them are very, very sharp. I think the CV also has a narrower depth of field, or more severe, dramatic movement from in-focus to out of focus.

If anyone wants to properly post this comparison, I can send the RAW files.

The first pics are of a screenshot of the pics side by side from LR classic, 3:1 magnification. The second shots are the overall scene for descriptive purposes.

Awesome lens with maddening user experience due to the adapter. Also, not good for portraits due to very, VERY high microcontrast and sharpness. Throw in a good dose of choppy bokeh and you can understand why I sold mine.

For landscape purposes, it's awesome, but I really only use >50mm for portraits, so it wasn't getting much use.

From the samples here it does look really nice. What 35 or 40 are you going to get to complement it?

I started at 28/50/100 (Minolta). When I got into rangefinders I went with a 21/35/75 but have since gravitated back.

I'd be curious to learn what Cosina tells the distributor. Not sexy enough? Not enough demand? A modern reinterpretation of the Tele-Elmarits I, perhaps ignorantly, think would do well.

Right. I just meant that if you're gonna unmount the 75, your next reasonably wider (the 50's, what, 3 steps?) is the 21. That's a huge gap.
