been playing around with the lens for a day now - subject separation is great, hopefully get some decent shots over the weekend.

yes, there's apparent CA/ purple/green fringing (at f1.2) in certain scenarios but lightroom managed to sort most of it out.

the sharpness is nice at F.1.2.
are you guys finding that theres quite a contrast jump from f1.2 to 1.4/1.6 etc? (slightly hazy when wide open)

a fair bit of hunting when using auto focus (that could either be me trying to get to grips with using a f1.2 or perhaps sigma will release a firmware update very soon?)

I actually am not finding much difference from f1.2 to f1.4. More so 1.2 to 2 I can make out the pics getting tighter.

I’m also seeing some hunting though indoors around my house, especially with a subject closer to the edge of the camera. Not sure how much of this is attributable to the layout of on-sensor phase detect or the lens not being contrasty enough at the edge of frame at at 1.2 for good CD focus. Also of issue to me is that Eye-AF is not closing about 10-15% of the time. The 7r3 is placing a green box around the eye, but the shots will be slightly back or front focused (which at 1.2 means hair half way back my son’s head will be sharp or the shirt sleeve on his shoulder if he’s in profile).

Maybe that’s as good as it can get at 35/1.2 with eye af, but my other lenses just don’t miss, including the 55/1.8 and 28/1.4 Art, even the 28/2 FE.

Manual focus is a nice experience though. sigma does it right with the manual focus override. Unfortunately there’s no distance markings which were a nice touch on the other Art lenses. The other Art lenses also did manual focus over ride even in AF-C, I’m not sure if this Sigma will do that. Granted it is a little sketchy to “fight” the focus mechanism with AF-C.

"not being contrasty enough at the edge of frame at at 1.2 for good CD focus." You are focussing outside the PDAF area on the A7r3? I never do that for people photography. CDAF is too slow for me.

"Also of issue to me is that Eye-AF is not closing about 10-15% of the time" At what distance? In-/outdoors? AFC/AFS?

I didn't detect any issues so far (my wife had around 3000 images done solely with the 35/1.2 and so far she didn't observe any issues in LR. The lens is super sharp and spot on, but I will check again.

ill do some more tests later today (regarding contrast)
from f1.2 to 1.4/1.6
from f1.2 to F2

yes, im finding the same outcome with focusing. about 10-15 percent out with auto focus. perhaps a test needs to be done stopped down.

also, sigma did a recent firmware update to their other lens which included my 50/1.4
the improvement in focusing was fantastic.

I just did a quick test with my girlfriend yesterday in quiet situations. The Zony is consistently sharper in the eyes than the Sigma. I will post a few results if I

Allow me to quote myself. After some others tests with my (quiet) girlfriend and my (not so quiet) brother, the ratio of keepers with the 35 1.2 is at least as good as with the Zony (tested side by side). No problem for me to use the Sigma saturday for my next wedding then.

Good to hear. Was my observation, too. So far, except for weight, we are very happy with this lens. I am thinking replacing the second Sony with the 35/1.2, too.

Thanks for you first feedback by the way. It's because of you and BastianK that I pulled the trigger. No regrets.

Now, I own :

- an average copy of the Zony, not that sharp in the center but with corners which looks more or less the same, which is not easy to find
- a very good copy of the Samy, way sharper than the Zony but which gave me some total freezes of the cameras (a few firmwares ago, but I don't take the risk anymore for paid work). Its only real optical flaw is a bad flare resistance.
- This marvelous tank

I think that I will sell the Zony and keep the Samyang and the Sigma. But who will buy a second hand Sony Zeiss given its reputation will be another story...

Yes sometimes my subject is at the bottom left or right of frame, you are right though I shouldn’t do that if Possible.

Distance for focusing inconsistencies happened to me where I lost a good shot I can actually remember was at 2 feet, 6 feet, and 10 feet. There of course was some more.

Here’s a shot that was missed but I liked it regardless so I kept and printed it anyway. Notice the eyes out of focus. With this shot I had a green box around his left eye (camera right). I was in AF-C and he wasn’t moving much at all. You can see I was in a relatively decent shutter speed too. I believe I had the profoto a1x about 10 ft behind me too with a remote trigger, not sure if that matters, in fill flash mode, camera in manual.

, almost the same for me. We have two Sonys, one is very sharp in the center but otherwise slightly decentered. No problem for single people shots, but difficult when doing group shots or landscapes. The other copy has four good corners but sharpness isn't that high in the center, still a nice copy.
We have the Samyang, too, but I too had a lot of freezes. I do not use it at weddings anymore out of the same reason. I gave it to my daughter, she uses it on her a6000. Flare resistance was really awful.

The Sigma seems to fulfill its promise up to now.

My understanding of LoCA LaCA was challenged by someone who didn't agree with my assessment of the lens. I took a few shots to illustrate my point of view (some real world as requested and some quick and dirty [tinfoil] for practical purposes). Then someone else was curious about how others lenses would fair in the foil test so I did the tests with a few lenses that seemed relevant. All parties involved seemed to benefit in some way from the results.

Foiled again!

Never seen so much foil in a thread before. It’s FM’s latest “does-my-lens-look-my-decentered-to-you?” craze.

BTW, not a complaint, just enjoying. Carry on.

I'll buy it, I could use less LoCA.
Also I used matte tinfoil I couldn't find the shinny stuff in the house. Maybe I should redo my tests after a trip to the grocery store?

The point I was making is that you cannot compare the results of such tests across different foil/lighting.

Funny you mention the matte foil. My tin foil has a matte side and a shiny side. The first pic I posted which is similar to Fred's pic with low LoCA was purposely shot using the matte side

The second pic which is worst LoCA (even worse than your sample) was shot one day earlier directly under a down light.

The final pic was shot similar location as the first pic but on the shiny side of the Foil.

I think the best way for you to answer whether your lens is below average is to bring your lens and test another copy in store and shoot side by side .

After using it for a lifestyle shoot, I can conclude it's a nice lens. Has some CA and flaring, but not enough to complain about. Focus seems accurate and average paced. Insanely sharp at f1.2 as well. No more pixel peeping and whining from me!
