Off topic, but at a recent family reunion I tried using the CV 21/3.5 as a portrait lens in crop mode on the R3. Set at f4 and with an equivalent 32mm focal length, it was VERY good. So sharp I was amazed and with a rendering that was quite beautiful. Now, I’m sure the 1.4 version would be better, but dang was it a nice experiment.
*edit* Example below.
First of all - really nice family picture you took here!
About your impressions concerning the result in crop-mode respectively the use as a moderate wide angle,
actually I am not surprised at all.
The crop abilities of your Sony a7r3 is very well known and the sharpness and qualities of these great new wide angles really make this use as as cropped moderate wide angle very possible!
So not only tele lenses become much more versatile!
The GM 24mm 1.4 is also a good example for this usefulness

Nice family picture with the King Charles. I have one too.

I don't prefer the sunstars this lens produces. They are not well defined, have color/blobs in or around them, and I just find them to look to skinny and small (the size might be OK, but the sunstar spikes are too skiny - remind me of a cheap sunstar filter). I'd take a Loxia 21 sunstar any day.
..here is the same image taken with the Loxia - is the sunstar realy better?

I like this family portrait a lot, but you really need the very distant background on this shot. If you use the 21 f/3.5 in crop mode, then your depth of field even wide open is that of an f/5 lens not in crop mode. You also will lose dynamic range (about a stop) and the highest ISO before noise becomes bothersome will be about a stop less. As your shot illustrates there are still lots of applications where this won't matter, but there will be other situations in which it will.
Well this lens fuels the fire for me. Now i got the 75 coming I'm in a nice place to get the juices flowing. For me its a burn out thing. Ive been fighting it for decades.
This is exactly why I have 2 lens kits one for me and one for work. I know its weird

I've been doing the same and love the 32mm FL. (similar FOV to RX1RII)
This CV 21/1.4 looks like a stellar lens! Sadly, it's not for me — I have the CV 21/3.5 for size and the 24 GM for speed, so I don't have a place for this lens. Seeing the lovely images in this thread eases the pain a little

Thanks for the review Fred and the many sample images and thoughts to everyone else! I have been shooting a Loxia for a while and really enjoying the small and light form factor, awesome rendering sharpness/clarity, and the beautiful sunstars. The 16-35 f4 rarely comes out since I got it. Now I'm super intrigued in the CV 21. The main reason I'm interested is for night/astro photography, and the wider aperture can probably open up some creative possibilities in other situations. Has anyone replaced their Loxia with the new CV?
As an aside, yowza did the second-hand price of the Loxia 21 drop! I bought one for $1200 two years ago and now it looks like it's going for $800.
I get a Tenba Cooper 8 today. Let you know how it fits my small kit. Need to sell bags now
I know this is OT but hopefully this will be a quick answer. Guy, will the Cooper 8 fit more than your PD 5L? Just curious if you think the Cooper is better than the 5L.
