You make it sound easy, but that wasn't my experience at all. I wanted to like the 21L, but after hours of struggle, I found no way to carry my 24-105, 16-35, and A7r2 with one lens attached and easily swap out lenses. I needed to remove the pack entirely and set it down, move the pack to my chest, or try to dangerously juggle the camera body and two lenses. The camera cube and side opening were simply too small and tangled with zippers.

Well, glad you found that the PD works better for you. That's the great part about having a few options, is people are able to find something that works best for their own uses.

Funny, I feel the exact opposite! I don't mind how the Prvke looks, and I like its functionality, but I think the PD looks way better! I might be the odd one out there though

PD 20L has arrived so I am now able to compare the two side by side. Two very difference backpack designs, both with plusses and minuses. Now that I know how to release and tighten straps quickly on both packs, I am able to swing around my shoulder and access gear from the sides without having to take either pack off 👍

I am already familiar with the PeakDesign dividers from using PD Sling bags on a regular basis, but I must say these dividers in the PD backpack really shine. Very stable/stong for quick shelf like configurations. I did a quick test with the GM 100-400 lengthwise on one side and the A7r3 mounted GM 24-70 on the other with plenty of room to add other lenses and flash + stuff and full rain jacket in the top.

Pick one already ! Not just yet. I also threw in a Mindshift 13 Sling into this compare too. This is my second try with the Mindshift, but now my use case is a bit different from when I tried the Mindshift last year.

One thing I'll say about the Prvke - access without putting pack on the ground isn't my #1 priority and that may be one reason it works for me. If I'm walking/hiking with it as a daypack I will already have a camera out. If I am in field, my bag is in a jeep/whatever or it's on the ground. One thing I like about the material - it wipes clean.
The bag will see a lot of challenges this year (four more big trips) so we'll see how it does.

If you don't mind my asking, is there a reason you are not looking at the Mindshift Photocross 15 Backpack in evaluating vs the Wandrd Prvke21L and PD 20L? For reference, I'd had a Wandrd Prvke 21L for the last ~9 months, and have used it for all travels and day hikes. It's very comfortable, and I really like the many pockets with places to store small things. However, I also have an issue with lens changing. My current solution is one of 2:

1) For day hikes, where I don't care about how I look or about theft I use 2 PD Capture Clips, one on each strap. The left strap carries the camera and the main lens that I am using; the right strap carrys a PD Capture Lens, where I store the other lens I may use. I typically try to limit myself to two lenses on hikes, but if I have a third lens, it'll go in the cube

2) For city walking, I will just keep the camera in the cube and use the side access, but of course changing lenses isn't optimal in this setup. In fact, I usually just use a PD 10L sling for urban/city walking. However, the strap definitely cuts into my shoulder and becomes pretty uncomfortable over the course of a day.

I took a look at the PD 20L backpack and passed on it due to fit/comfort - the waist belt didn't provide much support, and the straps (like my sling) weren't that comfortable for me. However, like my PD10L, I assume the PD 20L would allow you to change lenses really easily.

This brings me back to looking at the Photocross 15 - it looks like it makes it easier to change lenses (a la the PD 20L) but hopefully it's more comfortable (a la the Wandrd Prvke 21L).

I guess that's why we have closets fulll of backpacks :/

Thank you FearlessPhotog. My current excuse, If one more box shows up at my place with a camera bag in it, my wife might pack me up and ship me out 🤪

I like the scenarios you describe. I too use my PD slings 5L and 10L for local jobs and leisure. These PD slings are very easy to work with particularly when changing lenses. I've learned to limit what I take along in these slings because as you say the strap padding is on the thin side not to mention cramming in too much is not good for any bag in action.

I do like the Mindshift 13 Sling but it may not be big enough for my original requirements and not too sure about the cross shoulder strap design either, otherwise the 13 meets some of my other requirements. The Photocross 15 might be an interesting best of both worlds. Will check this out too.

Believe it or not, I was not able to attach the PD clip to the PD 20L Backpack strap the first few tries. Need to spend more time on that. Fit first try on the Prvke strap.

What is in the Prvke right now is the a7r3 with the 24-70 GM on it; the 70-200 GM; and the Loxia 21. That's about as much as I can fit in the small camera cube. This would more than cover all my usual needs on any short trip where I am ok bringing only one body; in fact, I'd usually leave the 70-200 at home and bring the 85 GM.

Trip example: I am headed to Greenland in 3 weeks. I will pack similarly to above in the Prvke, swapping the 24-70 GM for the 16-35 GM. Possibly swapping the FE 55 1.8 for the Loxia. I will also be able to fit in some filters, cards, etc., plus laptop and/or iPad Pro, plus things I need in the plane cabin with me, and my travel tripod straps to the bottom (it does NOT fit in the tripod/bottle pocket, which is annoying).
Now, no way is this enough gear for a big trip like Greenland, so in my hard shell cabin size roller bag I will have an a9 body and the giant Sigma 14mm 1.8 Art, as well as clothes (I need those). The roller will get gate checked on the small planes.
If I get REALLY unlucky and the Prvke gets gate checked too (so far this has only happened on 9-passenger Cessnas where women can't even have purses) - I take out the camera cube and my in-cabin essentials and drop em in a one-ounce packable tote bag.

When out shooting from a boat, I will bring the WHOLE kit in the Prvke, using the space above the camera cube for the second body and fourth lens, because weight won't be as big a deal. If I am hiking I'll cut the kit by 2/3. (Not camping on this trip, so I can leave stuff in the hotel.)

So, the Prvke 21 does not hold my whole kit for a dedicated photo trip where I would bring two bodies, unless I use the space above the camera cube. But I would not expect any 21L pack to do so.

As you can tell, I overthink packing.

Thank you Elizabeth77. No over-thinking judgment coming from me 😉. If we could just find the one right bag to do it all feather light...but then I'd also have to find the one camera and lens that does it all and well, what fun would that be? Otherwise and as @FearlessPhotog wrote "I guess that's why we have closets fulll of backpacks :/"

you are a good packer, I love it! ready for anything.

With that said, I always have two bodies in my 21L.

currently I have z6 with ftz and 58 1.4 hood (fits reversed or not reversed) AND z7 with ultra thin sony to nikon adaptor, and 85 1.4GM which is a big lens (hood reversed). only room available now in camera chamber is something like 4 filter cases or 2 (3) filter wallets or about four batteries stacked up (to give you an idea).

OR

z7 with 24-70S f2.8! hood reversed AND
z6 with 58G hood reversed and 3 filter cases or hood not reversed and no extra room.

I think you must be liking that 85 GM hehehe

Fair point, I can pack 2 bodies if I don't pack two sizable zooms. Part of my "plot" is also to keep my in-cabin bag weight down (thus the Sigma in the roller bag).

I was at B&H today and looked at the Peak Design bag again. I just don't love the design overall but I can see some advantages especially if you don't want to pack anything but gear. It has the two waterbottle/tripod pockets, which is nice, and I think they are a little bigger than the pocket on the Prvke. I'm still really happy I have the Prvke.

the 85GM is a great lens
the adapter sucks, so I am not sure of my longterm commitment, as I've shifted back towards nikon now.

the PD bag
when I packed everything up to head to a gig, the bag works great
but as soon as I start removing stuff, the stuff left in the bag was never tucked in well and napping comfortably.

I tried 3x with those bags
30L 1x
20L 2x

I noticed the return to Nikon thing. I won't derail the thread by asking why We like you anyway

Honestly I just took the Prvke on a non photo trip and it's really useful for that, too. Nothing falls around.

Have paired down my backpack choices to one backpack and one sling. But I also added a large shoulder bag to compare as well, the water proof MindShift Gear Exposure 15 Shoulder Bag.

I returned the Wandrd Prvke in favor of the PeakDesign 20L. For my needs, the PD turned out to be easier for me to swing around "sling style" for gear access/swaps. Also I am able to pack the A7r3 mounted w/ GM 24-70 and the A9 mounted with GM 100-400 easily in the PD with plenty room for other gear and clothing. PD dividers really shine in their Everyday Backpack which IMO really provides a lot flexibility with what you can do with this bag to include cinching the pack all the way down to 12L or max about 20L. There are a couple of worries with the PD design that I need to think about. One, I have to make sure the top folds are pushed inward under the top cover else weather could get in. Two, both sides of the bag open up, therefore if not careful and you forget to zip "both"sides of the bag, gear could take a horrible tumble 🤔

The weather resistant Mindshift Photocross 13 sling is still in the running vs the PD 20L. It too accommodates the A9 mounted with GM 100-400 and the A7r3 mounted with GM 24-70 plus stuff. I would however, have to strap a jacket on the outside of the bag. This bag is designed to be worn as a sling and the straps can get a little awkward /thin if you decide to wear in the front of your body for any length of time. For this scenario I was able to attach a comfy velcro Replacement Shoulder Pad & Strap on the thin strap that rests on your shoulder when you swing this bag around to the front.

Up next is to test/compare the the water proof MindShift Gear Exposure 15 Shoulder Bag vs PD 20L and Mindshift 13 Sling.

How comfortable is the PD 20L when loaded normally? I have seen a number of reviews where people praise the packing but are unhappy with the comfort of the straps and how the body of the bag feels when you carry it and so have returned it.

Good question. I've heard the same. I am paying close attention to that aspect of the PD 20L myself. For now I am ok with the load I described above A9 + GM100-400, A7r3+GM 24-70, rain coat, and other stuff ( this kit is a heavy load from my normal usage). One or two cameras and 2-4 smaller primes would not be a problem for me either. The PD 20L strap system is able to engage/disengage quickly too so as not to put all weight on shoulder straps alone. Well placed sternum strap helps a lot. PD 20L IMO is well suited for every day, events and probably light hiking, trails and makes a nice backpack/sling hybrid experience.

If I was planning a heavy duty backpacking trip with a lot of gear and clothing that I had to carry with me all day, then I would go with something more substantial like the Wandrd Prvke series or something designed for multi day, rugged hikes.

I’ve packed my PD 20L with my A7RIII, 24GM, 50ZA, 85GM, 12.9” iPad Pro, MacBook Pro 13”, AD 200, plus various accessories (SSD, batteries, 24 oz HydroFlask, etc) for all day shooting events/traveling and have felt pretty comfortable carrying the pack all day. I often carry all of the above minus the MacBook and AD 200 as part of my everyday carry with no complaints.

The sling type access is great for me when changing lenses in the wild and the styling is miles ahead of anything else out there for my tastes.

I’m on the shorter but more muscular/thicker side if that makes any difference. For my body type, I feel like the backpack sits pretty comfortably. Yes, it would be nicer if the straps had a tad more padding but it’s fine for me as it is.

I have a side access backpack, sort of like the PRVKE, the Fstop Dalston. I like the bag and at the same time, I agree about the lens change, it seems a bit awkward to do. Most of the time, I use it with only one lens, and the rest of the bag for accessories. I love the roll top, where has that been all my life. I have a cheat for change lenses, using the PD clip on the bag, and when I swing on one side, I have the camera on the clip, then change if needed..... and rarely do. I typically use the bag as a normal backpack with one camera and lens most of the time.

I find the PD 20L appealing, but it may be overkill for what I need. My application is traveling, when I am out for the day seeing things or walking around a new city. I want to carry a 7 series body with a total of three lenses. Which 3 lenses vary, but they are usually some combination of a 24-105, Batis 40 or CV 40 or Canon 50/1.2L, a 16-35/2.8, and/or a 12-24/4 or a Batis 18. So none of these is a tiny lens, but then I don't want to carry more than three plus the 7 series body.

I am always with others, and the premium is on convenience and being able to change lenses without bringing everything to a stop.

I am probably best off with a sling bag--either the Mindshift Photocross 10 or 13 or the Think Tank Sling 10 or 20.

It would be nice if there were a good sling that by design could carry a body + 3 lenses and left enough room to stash a light jacket. I may be able to keep the jacket on the strap of a sling bag, but it is easy to lose it that way, and it gets in the way of accessing the bag.

PD 20L is my strong recommendation, Chiron. I bought a Think Tank Sling 20. Very nice, love it. Then I learned of the PD 20L, and went to a store. I instantly liked it. Bought it. It’s the bag I carry with me every day, now, to work, on day hikes, currently for a week-end visit to my parents. I can put all sorts of stuff in it in addition to either one or two cameras with lenses on or not. As an avid photographer for the past 25 years, I’ve never had a better camera bag, or a better camera backpack. It’s not too big. It swings around like the Sling as well. . . . Just buy it. . . . The TT Sling 20, which was my most used camera bag until I bought the PD 20L is now retired. (Almost new if your want to buy it from me. :-) ). I can’t think of a reason to ever use it in favor of the PD 20L. I still have uses for a couple of my other bags, but I doubt I’ll use them much at all now either given that the PD 20L is so versatile, carries well is comfortable, and holds a lot.
