p.3 #17 · Wandrd Prvke 21L or PeakDesign 20L or something else? | |

I tried the PRVKE 21L and quickly became baffled by why some photographers like that backpack. Yes, it is good-looking and appears well made, and it may be comfortable. However, the fatal flaw with the 21L (and I assume the larger WNDRD backpack) is that the side camera access is, at best, a challenge to use. The side access is tolerable if all you want to do is remove and return your camera. If you want to do something more complicated, like change lenses or access other equipment, your only options are to (1) set the pack on the ground and fully open it, or (2) take the pack off, turn it around and hang it in front of you, and open the clamshell.
So I then tried the Peak Design 20L, which for use as a camera backpack is far superior. The openings on each side provide easy access to all of your equipment and make changing a lens as easy as with a sling or shoulder bag. The interior dividers can be quickly reconfigured just by flipping them into new positions. The PD 20L may not be waterproof, but mine is certainly water resistant; I've worn it on rainy hikes and have had no issue with water penetration. As for comfort, that is of course a personal matter. In my case, I don't find the PD 20L to be uncomfortable at all. Most recently, I loaded it with my A7r2, 24-105/4, 16-35/4, filters, a small tripod, several bottles of water, snacks, and a jacket, and wore it on a 12-mile hike with 3,000 feet of elevation gain (and loss) through a Hawaiian state park, and I never found it to be uncomfortable in any respect. Would a dedicated hiking backpack have been more comfortable? Probably, but that does not make the PD uncomfortable.
So I do not recommend the WNDRD PRVKE 21L unless you plan to carry only a single camera and lens, or unless you are OK with slow and awkward lens changes....Show more →
I have a side access backpack, sort of like the PRVKE, the Fstop Dalston. I like the bag and at the same time, I agree about the lens change, it seems a bit awkward to do. Most of the time, I use it with only one lens, and the rest of the bag for accessories. I love the roll top, where has that been all my life. I have a cheat for change lenses, using the PD clip on the bag, and when I swing on one side, I have the camera on the clip, then change if needed..... and rarely do. I typically use the bag as a normal backpack with one camera and lens most of the time.
