Until it says “delivered” by tomorrow, I won’t know for sure but I am scheduling Saturday for trying out both lenses, not testing but evaluating them under real life conditions. Well yes I can see your point. I still think they are pretty close if I look over all the samples I've seen so far. I think this recent test paints the 100-400/1.4TC in the worst light of the samples I've seen so far from a few sites.
I also think there may be some issue with the focus plane of the 100-400 at 560mm image...it seems to be backfocused compared to the 200-600 image...it should have 2/3 stop more DOF plus the 40mm deficit DOF and yet it seems to not have the eye/face of the lion in focus and focus is more towards the back fur and the pipe behind. I don't know...I will see when mine gets here and try to do a controlled test eventually.
I think I will end up using the 200-600 more than 100-400 and may sell the 100-400. My only concern is the weight of it so I will see how the weight/balance feels in the hand next week. I'm getting too spoiled with Nikon's PF lenses so have become a wimp
The MFD doesn't bother me as much, I do make use of the 100-400's MFD but I'm also used to longer MFDs than the 200-600 on my 500PF, 200-500 and 400DOII. The 500PF at 3m usually doesn't pose a problem, the DOII MFD does get in the way sometimes.

Good for you guys. I didn't get the email from B&H (order 6/16). Although I chat with them today they claimed that the shipping date in my order is the day they will ship, I don't have high hope.
Maybe it's the universe' signal that I should cancel it...

I watched a comparison on Youtube the other day and he claimed there is very little different between the two when the 600 F4 is stopped down to the same aperture as the 200-600 G.
I find that hard to believe but it sure speaks well of the zoom.

The difference is less in the actual image quality. Yes, there is some difference but it is really slight that it wouldn't matter much under real life shooting conditions. Where it matters more is in the ability to isolate the target of the prime and the shallower depth-of-field of course plays a role in the rendition. Although the target is only marginally or barely any "sharper" for lack of a better word but it does appear sharper since the background is rendered softer due to the shallower depth-of-field. The bokeh of the 200-600mm zoom at the same 600mm will be definitely busier, in other words.
Plus, and this is what Sony was touting at the Event I attended in June, the AF performance between the two is where your money meets the asphalt. Of course, it applies more to situations of fast-paced actions, like birds in flight, etc. What good is the sharpness if the target is slightly out of focus since the lens cannot keep up? Don't get me wrong, the 200-600 is no slouch in the AF performance but yet, the prime lens has a better AF system. The prime lens utilizes 2 XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors, providing faster, more precise AF and more reliable tracking. If I think it is easy to understand the difference between the 2 lenses in that aspect, if we use the difference in the AF ability of the A9 to that of the A7r III as an analogy.

the dad in the little spot in the back of the field..then he fly back out to the nest.. you will see what i mean when i said 100-400G grab focus much faster.
When he perch on the "no stop" sign, all sudden take off, be prepare that it will not focus.

Mine was supposed to ship by Priority but someone messed up and it is coming by Expedited - but there's a chance it may still show up Monday.

I will try out both lenses there this coming Saturday, Alex. The father owl was feeding owlets at 2 burrows when I was there 2 weeks ago. He was a busy body that day with so many hungry owlets to feed .

Well at least Adorama shipped me a lens but they sent it UPS ground. When I preorded the lens it said free next day shipping. A bit disappointing. Instead of Friday I won't get my lens until Monday or Tuesday.
