Coming from Canon I loved my 300 2.8 L IS MK 1 on my 5D MKIII but it didn't adapt too well with a Sony A7RIII. IQ was fine but the AF was far from stellar and worse than the 5D MKIII IMO. Fast forward to today and I have the 70-200 GM and Sony A Mount 300 2.8 MK I and I am very interested in the 200-600. The SAL300 is very very sharp but the adapted lens isn't the best for focussing and it gets worse when the lighting isn't ideal. I was spoiled on AF speed once I got the 70-200 and DMF focusing with the bluetooth remote control for astro work.
Long shot but I am wondering if anyone has used the SAL300 and determined its not very viable on a A7RIII and any opinions if the 200-600 would produce more keepers due to AF accuracy. My current SAL300 works with 3x TCs and I have even stacked TCs to manually focus 1600+ moon shots. My concern with the 200-600 is obviously the aperture and background separation more than ISO gain needed for sufficient shutter speed.
My main focus for the telephotos zooms and primes would be wild wildlife and zoo wildlife, deep sky object astrophotography and moon photography. Ive primarily always been a prime person but with no native 300 option I am strapped for options!

Any chance you can test it against the 100-400mm + 1.4x? Myself and many others have been trying to find any sample images between the two without luck. I just returned my 100-400mm barely within the return window anticipating that the 200-600mm will be the same or better based on MTF's and initial feedback but want to make sure it's worth waiting for

Just got an email from Sony Pro Support saying that members who preordered the new lenses can register their order to receive priority delivery. I missed the original pre-order date and didn't order mine until a couple days ago, so I'm very interested to see if this really means I'll get the lens sooner.

I pre-ordered on opening day and also received the email from Sony Pro Support. I registered but it's not clear how "priority" is suppose to work. Does Sony ship direct to those who have registered and pre-paid the retailer or is it simply up to the retailer to prioritize shipments? I'm hoping it's the former and we actually benefit from a pre-release shipment.

My guess would be that Sony would increase the number of lenses allocated to the specific retailers from the first shipment, with the stipulation that they be used to fill the 'priority' orders.

Amazon Italy is selling 200-600 on preorder at 1770€. They told the price will rise once availability comes in, so it is a good moment for us to get it. But I will wait and see tests, I will stick to 100-400 now, maybe adding a TC or two in the next months.

Got the email from SPS. It was pretty straightforward to enter the Amazon order number and contact info. Hopefully it will ship on the announced date. Looking forward to comparing this against the Canon 400 f2.8 w/1.4TC MC-11 combo which is not possible to shoot hand held, struggles with BIF and AF.

One of our local boys has just had an initial test of the 200-600 and 600. If you check out his Youtube you will see a link underneath for some Raws off the A7RIII finally. Theres a couple of the surf shots that come up really nicely with the right editing.... If, like me, you've been waiting to see some 42meg raws then here is an initial look...

I also just posted up a little summation of all the great whites in Sony's arsenal on my IG if anyone is interested.
Runaway winner for me is still the 400mm, since I can simply add a 1.4 or 2x TC and still have the ability to go back to 400 if situations where I need to be a little wider. So glad I have one in my bag, but the 600 is on preorder and I will have to figure out if I'll ever reconsider a zoom lens and pick up the 200-600. All of the shots I took with it were pretty outstanding, but when light was not optimal, I have to admit there were a few missed shots. Sharp as can be however in excellent lighting conditions.
