Sorry, I may have mislead you. I am going through the photos I have been taking over the last couple months of road trips and after looking at how small the birds are in many of the photos, I realized that I MUST do something to get closer, hence the 200-600 order, which will be attached to my 1.4TC.
I will be posting some of the birds that I was able to get close enough to, , in the "Sony Birds and Wildlife Thread". Just posted a cooperative Cape May Warbler yesterday.
One other thing I am considering doing is going back to my A7Riii for when I am just "birding" (looking for new or rare birds), as much as I love the A9, I don't do a lot of BIF, especially when looking for small birds, and when I do, I can still use the A9. For stationary birds the A7Riii would give me a bit more crop room. Looking forward to an A7000 that AF's like and has the controls of the A9!

I agree that this lens should be mostly easily hand-holdable, but I will want an Arca-swiss foot for those times I want to put it on a monopod (I can't see me using a tripod, but I do have a bad shoulder and from time to time need to rely on a monopod for some relief). Everyone has differing needs/wants.

lol...returned the lens back to Sony today.
I'll have my full review with sample later today. BUT to make it short... this lens doesn't have linear XD motor inside; therefore, infinity to MFD is quite slow. In another word, bird fly toward you will be a problem. This is where your experience kick in to compensate for it.
I invited Sony manager out to shot burrow owl with me this morning and he has a hard time to get the owl flying toward him from a field that has the same color as the owl (those that shot Burrowing owls in CA know what i'm talking about). But this short coming is not a surprise thing since Sony brass already talk about it in an interview recently.
If you already have 100-400 / 1.4x TC, i don't see the benefit of getting this lens. Don't get me wrong, the AF speed is fast, IQ is great. Slap on 1.4x TC, AF tracking speed is good (but not in-coming). Slap on 2x TC, i was able to track swallow with no problem BUT the image quality is so soft. (expected too)
This lens would be a good transition for folk from DSLR camp that want native lens, no hassle of adapting. Affordable price.
For 95% of normal user, it get a passing grade. For the remain 5% that expect nothing but the best, this is not for you. There is a REASON why prime lenses is 6 times more. There is no such free lunch after all.

Thanks for your mini review Alex, it's helpful, and it's good to get a real world review of the lens.
I have the 100-400 GM and am looking at this lens as a way to get to > 800mm natively without dropping $13k. But if IQ is soft with the 2x I'll probably stick with the 1-4 and grab either the 600/4 GM or a Canon IS ii if I want to save some money. I'll need to find a way to view your full review on Facebook, as I don't have an account.

They certainly do, and just like the foot on the 100-400, I can mount the 200-600 on both my monopod and tripod without using an Arca-Swiss foot.

The benefit would be for more reach for static subjects. A9 & 100-400 for action and/or closer shots, A6400 & 200-600 for static and/or distant shots. I would bet the latter combo would give better results than upsizing the former combo.

400GM or 600GM is the way to go. Canon 600IS ii would be another lower cost alternative for you but you don't get the native speed and fast subject acquisition. If you don't shot fast moving bird like swallow or falcon or anything that make sudden movement then that would be your best route.

oh absolutely.. if it is for just for static subject then 200-600/1.4x TC would give you the run for the money.
