Justin I just did a fantasy packing-
Sony 16-35/4
Tam 28-75
Sony 70-300
Sony 200-600.

If Tam will get off their arse I'll sub out the 16-35/4 with their 17-28.

I guess my one issue is how to get PDAF to work with the 200-600 + 1.4X teleconverter on my a7Riii I want to use this lens with my a9 but also with the a7Riii. Also figure out how I am going to pay for it given that I have already gotten the 135/1.8 and 24/1.4 GM this year.

Yeah, that's going to take more than a wish aimed at Sony's direction. It'll be interesting to see if the next iteration 7r has that capability but, short some firmware miracle, I think we're stuck with the limitation. My recommendation is to shoot the rIII more with the 135, which will do a better job realizing all that resolution than any zoom.

As for how to pay for it, I'm going to let you in on my patented get rich quick scheme. It's one step. Find something you can do where you make a lot of money really fast.

Badda-bing-badda-boom. Problems solved.

Daniel I think A7Riii will be just fine. I've done enough BIF work to know it is good with herons, osprey, eagles etc.
I'm attempting a Greentoe on the a6400 currently.

I'll be curious to hear your thoughts on the 6400. Still holding out hope on the mini a9 for a while more.

So far nothing from Greentoe....maybe a message from the camera gods that I should just keep waiting on the a7000.
but Poof's a6300 is long in the tooth. She could use the 6400.

Fortunately I have found a solution that does pay for all my gear.. The problem is though my real world job takes too much time away from photography and travel. It does pay the bills though.

FYI, confirmed from a Sony shooter on a FB Sony Alpha Photographers group who HAS a 200-600 (I don't know him, or how he has one - he's got a photo of it) that the tripod foot is DIFFERENT than the 100-400, so our existing Kirk/RRS aftermarket feet will NOT fit. He posted photos of the two tripod feet next to each other and confirmed the attachment point to the ring is larger on the 200-600, so they are NOT interchangeable.

Can you kindly tell him to send us raw files comparing the 100-400mm + 1.4x vs 200-600mm? 😬

Appreciate the info though. Thanks

I would have expected that the 200-600mm G lens would have been a different and larger foot than the 100-400mm GM as the lens itself is larger and heavier than the GM lens.

Unfortunatley the Arca Type Foot is another non recoverable expense for the 200-600mm G lens along with a larger single or multi lens case and the much larger 95mm filters (rather than the 77mm of the GM).

It's a sure thing; it's a lightweight 600/4. I waited for a long time for the 600/4 and finally broke down and coughed up $12K for the 400/2.8. The day it arrived a few weeks ago I knew the 600/4 was imminent.

Dave

I would like to point out that my "sure thing" was more reliable than SAR level 4.

Since I like the foot on the 100-400 and don't use it 99% of the time, I could care less about a larger/heavier foot on the 200-600. Handholding is why these lenses appeal to me, plus the zoom. Otherwise I would buy a 600 f4, but have no desire to be a tripod shooter.

Hi Tony,

Unfortunately having broken/shattered both wrists in a bicyle and car accident in 1993 I no longer have hands as steady as I used to have and rely on using a tripod. It also allows for consistent framing for bracketing and changes in the subject of the images.

This guy talked about testing the 1.4X and the 2X TC on the 200-600, not at pixel peeping level though.

I received an invitation from Sony to try out this 200-600mm and the 600mm GM lens next Wednesday in Los Angeles! I hope they setup some kind of sporting event or so. I signed up and they issued just a single ticket. I will bring just my camera and I hope I could take use it for real picture taking on my SD card. We will see....

Guys, I am planning of bringing two bodies with me, my A9 and A7r III and yes, both TCs, as well. Maybe I will take my monopod, too. One the other hand, they may not let you use your own body and they provide the cameras with the SD slots blocked. I know they will provide hors d'oeuvres and drinks but I will not go for that. I will contact them as it gets closer and get more info on that.
