I haven’t read this entire thread, but does anyone think the RRS replacement foot for the sel100400GM/Sel70200GM will be compatible with the new Sel200600g?

I know it’s unlikely anyone knows for sure at this point in time, but I have the RRS foot on my 100-400 already. Might be cool if I could use it on this new lens.

I heard a few people complain that the RRS foot is too long on the 100-400, but the extra length is probably a good thing with the 200-600.

Already watched a guy take the 200-600 to Scotland to shoot osprey in the rain and low light at ISO 25600 and basically every shot was good and he said AF is excellent and had no trouble on the A9 at all. He said he’ll be adding to his collection.

Exactly. The sigma 150-600 Sports I had and the sigma 60-600 Sports I bought a month ago(), when fully extended to 600mm, it’s quite front heavy, I can’t support it with my left arm for more than 40-50 seconds. But they are shorter to carry than the Sony beast for sure, that’s why I am looking for a new bag, my Tenba is 3” too short. One thing I really like about the Sony is it seems pretty easy to zoom from 200 to 600 , and from 600 to 200.

I mocked it up. Couldn't find a decent image of the teleconvertor, but you can see that with the TC the 100-400mm will be about the same length as the 200-600mm. And the Tamron will be quite a bit longer.

For those that are going to or consider the purchase of the new lens and/or sell their 100-400mm GM:

Minimum focus for the 100-400mmm GM is 3.22 ft = 0.98 m

Minimum focus for the 200-600mm is 7.88 ft = 2.4 m

If you find that you will need to focus as closely as the 100-400mm GM you may wish to consider carrying an extension tube at least when you expect to be in situations where you will need to focus closer than the capabilities of the lens.

I took the plunge and pre-ordered it at B&H. I'll likely end up using it more on the A6400 than my A7R3. Maybe on the A7R3 for more static work like birds perched on a tree of larger animals that are relatively static.

I ordered mine from B&H at 11:00 AM EST. Will wait to see it before I decide if my 100-400mm GM will stay on board. Answer is probably yes since they pack so differently in size but we will see.

I ordered my pair and thinking about the drop in polarizer since it also fits the 400 GM not sure when I would use it to tell you the truth.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how useful a polarizer would be for these two?

It most likely will fit, although it's also likely RRS will say "no" just to get people to buy another new foot...

I'm betting on it fitting. I would think Sony would have used the same sized mount on this lens. Looks the same anyways.
I like the length of the RRS foot on my 100-400. I'm actually wondering if I will find the foot a little short on the 200-600. We shall see.

That would be tempting. I wonder if Kerrisdale would have them?...but probably TCS having them is more related to their YouTube channel and their hosts being at the event.

The good news is that means other reviewers may have them this week to start doing better tests/videos that address all the questions and comparisons. IQ/AF compared to 100-400/1.4, size differences, handling differences and performance on other bodies than the A9 with and without TCs.

Pre-order is in for me. Orders started 30 minutes ago, based on initial reviews and responses, it seems very favorable. It will not replace the 100-400 IMO, but it will be a powerful counter to it. If it turns out it can replace it... best to get those 100-400 on the buy and sell boards early ;-)

No Cliff, you are wrong about that. The brightness is the same at the same aperture. The formula for the amount of light is Brightness X Area X Time. Brightness is controlled by the aperture. Area is controlled by the size of the part of the sensor you are using, and time is controlled by shutter speed. That give you the amount of light the sensor has to work with.

What you said above is only true if you keep the amount of light constant, but if the brightness of the light is controlled by the aperture, which it is, then that formula does not apply.

kind of - logic says that the area of light that is reflected through an optic is not collected light, but projected. Thus the projection of the light is the area that is applied. In a smaller sensor, you get that "crop" factor because the light is only being captured from the central zone. The excess light is then difussed by the housing / padding, etc. You do not gain or lose light based on sensor size. I wish people would understand that better. Then again, perhaps I'm the one with the twisted view on it?
