Geoff,

I was thinking that we could absolutely do our FL trips with this one lens and one camera body. The only thing you might miss is the closer focusing of the FE 100-400 for nesting birds in a place like Gatorland or St Augustine Alligator Farm.

Yes the 100-400 does shine in Gatorland...then again maybe we've done Gatorland to death already

No but I since there are at least two excellent aftermarket vendors with great reputations I can focus on, what for me, are higher priority issues. I don't ask Sony to provide an integrated arca-swiss compatible L-bracket built int the battery grip I buy.

Yes I saw the 95mm ring, was just a bit concerned since it's obviously at the extreme of what can be accommodated in terms of diameter. Given that it's a telephoto rather than wide angle I guess there's more leeway though.

Well, I apologize for not focusing on your issues. List them, and we'll all take a crack at solving them.

That's interesting. I thought most people would use this type of lens for still wildlife photography, hence the Arca-Swiss foot.

I have a arca-swiss clamp mounted on the 500PL long plate I use when I do video. That way I don't have to used different foot type or remove L-plate from my cameras. ProMediaGear also make the PM501 that is Manfroto video with integrated arca-swiss clamp.

I guess my one issue is how to get PDAF to work with the 200-600 + 1.4X teleconverter on my a7Riii I want to use this lens with my a9 but also with the a7Riii. Also figure out how I am going to pay for it given that I have already gotten the 135/1.8 and 24/1.4 GM this year.

I'd love that too (A7R3 to use pdaf beyond f/8), but I think it is a hardware issue so not something that can be changed/improved upon. I know a new camera will be coming down the path for me, an A7R4, an A9II, A9R.

So add that to my already over-extended camera equipment budget as well

I have a 95mm filter from a previous lens, now I need the Arca-Swiss foot and the lens coat so the lens barrel doesn't get scratched if I put the lens on hard surface. This day and age, why don't they just make an Arca-Swiss compatible foot in the first place?

Thanks for reminding me of the Lenscoat. I tried to pre one of them on the Nikon PF but they said they have to have a lens in hand first...makes sense of course, but if Sony can let worthless youtubers handle for a bit surely they could let Lenscoat handle long enough for measurements. I need a lenscoat more than I need pontification and self aggrandizement.

I know we are sort of putting the cart before the horse, I have been checking out a long case to carry this lens mounted to a camera. The lens itself is almost 13" long, plus another 3" for the body and the TC, we are looking at 16" inside height. I don't want a backpack or a big bag that I can put lots gears in. I just want a bag for this lens mounted on a camera only. This bag may work:

That’s basically the price we pay for an internal zooming mechanism, I guess. I wonder if we compare the Sigma 150-600mm lens fully extended to 600mm with the 200-600mm. I am confident they will be approximately of the same length.

Seriously take a look at TT glass taxi. Awesome bag for Long lenses. Actually I used it for my complete medium format kit. Tech cam , digital back and 3 very expensive Rodenstock lenses. Not even going to tell you what that bag was worth. Scary expensive. Lol

I just wish this was a F4 lens. I can sort of get away with a F4 given some pretty specific jobs which I can do right now with the 70-200 at about F4.5. One stop faster I’d be maybe first in line. But really looking forward to it coming out

I had a look at the Tamron G2 on the lensize site. It looks like it will be longer once zoomed out based on other photos on the internet of it zoomed and not zoomed. The Sigma Sport is even bigger so will be surely longer.

The 100-400GM, 1.4TC and zoomed out to 560mm looks like it will be very close to the length of the 200-600.

Not sure why not a single reviewer couldn't bother to take a quick photo of the 1-4 extended next to the 200-600.

Here is one more comparison of the last internal zooming lens I owned...

That one looks good. I'm like you, one case for a9+200-600G and little else. I'll have an RX100series in my Napoleon pocket for whatever. Inside height 16 inches should do it, but with a 1.4TC on? I still think so.

JayT that one too. I'd side with the Kinesis to save a coin or two, on a bag that will only be used during transport. Once there I'll be wearing the combo via Kirk Security Strap with rig tucked into the small of my back when walking.

What irritates me the most about these Sony press events is all these YouTubers come and don't bring any other gear to compare to or bring TCs or bring an A73 or A7R3 or A6400 etc.

I realize Sony wouldn't have told them what product they were releasing but if they checked up on SAR they would have had a good guess it was a longer lens. I surely would have brought along a 100-400, TCs and any other Sony bodies I owned (and most of these guys own a number of them) to compare. They had an entire Soccer match
...Show more

Geoff, Look at the 11th video down from the top. Don't know the guys name he is the one with the beard, he brought his TCs along and tried them out with the 600 and the 200-600.

Geoff, the length of the Sony 200-600mm when being used is not bad at all and chances are due to its internal zoom mechanism, it will be more comfortable to hold than the other zoom lenses with their extended zooming design. The only drawback of the internal zooming design that I can think of right now, is the length during transport while in the bag. The collapsible zoom design makes those lenses easier to pack and transport.
