Why an Arca-Swiss foot, and not a Manfrotto video head foot? More and more people are using this gear for video nowadays.

I am keeping the 100-400 GM, Scott. I use it for a variety of stuff. The 200-600 will strictly be a bird/airshow lens, or for moon shots. Would like to see how the moon looks like using the A7RIII and the 200-600 + 2X TC

When you develop a lens like the 200-600mm, how important is the requirement for video shooting?

Sony apparently thinks that a lot of people will be using lenses like this for video.

On the Canon system, years ago, I handheld my Canon 500/4 and 400/5.6 with great success. I also used the Canon 100-400 with mixed success, usually with the 1.4x converter.
I gravitate toward smaller birds, more songbirds than raptors.
I already own the Sony 100-400 and use it primarily for landscapes and elk/bears/deer.
The $10,000 + prices for the current Sony long primes would strain my budget.
I use the 100-400 & 1.4x TC for birds and the AF and IQ are good. There's enough data to crop fairly heavily (the desktop superzoom).
What that rig isn't good at is picking a small bird out of foliage. AF quite often fails - compared with my D500 anyway. Why? Maybe the line-type AF sensors on the A9. Or the f8 max not providing enough data. Or on-sensor PDAF not yet being quite as accurate as off-sensor.
But I'll get the 200-600 and use it with the TC. More pixels on the bird is always better.

I'm also keeping the 100-400 although it is likely to be relegated to landscape use + backup wildlife photography when I am out chasing birds with my daughter.

What irritates me the most about these Sony press events is all these YouTubers come and don't bring any other gear to compare to or bring TCs or bring an A73 or A7R3 or A6400 etc.
I realize Sony wouldn't have told them what product they were releasing but if they checked up on SAR they would have had a good guess it was a longer lens. I surely would have brought along a 100-400, TCs and any other Sony bodies I owned (and most of these guys own a number of them) to compare. They had an entire Soccer match and more time the next day to at least get a feel for how they compared and how the performance changed on the other cameras.
Unless Sony lets some of them have the gear for a few weeks back home, we won't get any more details or comparisons till after the lenses are shipping. I'd surely like to know more before forking over the cash but I also don't want to be at the end of a backordered line for months like the 500PF.

Geoff, I remember seeing your wish list of features of the rumored 200-600 in order for you to buy it. I can't find that post now, does the released specs check all the boxes you listed?

Yes it did tick the boxes...internal zoom (considering how big the lens looked in the leak), TC compatible, good reports on AF/IQ. But even then I said if it did tick those I would be more likely to buy it...not for sure. Without those things it would have been a for sure NO.
I pre-ordered so will make up my mind by Aug 2nd. Need to think more on my use cases for this lens versus what I use now from both Sony and Nikon.

I was thinking that we could absolutely do our FL trips with this one lens and one camera body. The only thing you might miss is the closer focusing of the FE 100-400 for nesting birds in a place like Gatorland or St Augustine Alligator Farm.

I've been asking this question for years. Perhaps it is because they really feel compelled to keep the entire lens white, including the foot.

Hi Mitesh,
Certainly correct regarding Gatorland where I took so many images with just my 100-400mm GM last month. The 200-600mm would not focus close enough without the addition of an extension tube.

Very much so they have the arca Swiss dovetail built in who wouldn't prefer that? Often times they sit lower also and some of them mount more securely than the way Sony has their feet mounted on these. The only thing I like about the Sony one versus say a Wimberly is you can remove them quickly. The RRS gives you both option same removal procedure and dovetail for tripod or gimbal heads. Why a foot would not have a arca Swiss dovetail is a mystery to me.

You can get a 95mm adapter for the Lee 100mm filter system.
