On the Canon system, years ago, I handheld my Canon 500/4 and 400/5.6 with great success. I also used the Canon 100-400 with mixed success, usually with the 1.4x converter.
I gravitate toward smaller birds, more songbirds than raptors.
I already own the Sony 100-400 and use it primarily for landscapes and elk/bears/deer.
The $10,000 + prices for the current Sony long primes would strain my budget.
I use the 100-400 & 1.4x TC for birds and the AF and IQ are good. There's enough data to crop fairly heavily (the desktop superzoom).
What that rig isn't good at is picking a small bird out of foliage. AF quite often fails - compared with my D500 anyway. Why? Maybe the line-type AF sensors on the A9. Or the f8 max not providing enough data. Or on-sensor PDAF not yet being quite as accurate as off-sensor.
