One feature I liked on the Tamron G2 150-600 was the included Arca Swiss compatible tripod foot. I wish that would trend among the other manufacturers.
The foot mount on the 200-600 looks exactly like the one on the GM 70-200/2.8 and GM 100-400. I use the Kirk Photo version on both of those. RRS already has one as well with an Arca-Swiss dovetail. I'm very happy with my Kirk ones.

Maybe useful to get an idea how big the 200-600 is compared to the 70-200 and 100-400.
I was thinking about switching to nikon because of their 200-500 and 500 PF. This lens is exactly what I was looking for however. Great step from sony!

To clarify, the 200-600 w/ a 1.4x tc will NOT pdaf on an A7RIII right?
From Sony's support site for the 200-600 with the a7R III:
1. When a Teleconverter (SEL20TC) is mounted, focal plane phase detection AF cannot be used.
2. When a Teleconverter (SEL14TC) is mounted, focal plane phase detection AF cannot be used for focal lengths with a maximum aperture value of F9 or above.
3. In camera system software of Ver. 2.00 or later, MODE3 of the shake compensation mode switch is enabled.
4. [Aperture Drive in AF] (still image) in the menu can be used in camera system software of Ver. 2.00 or later.

Makes sense for wildlifers and birders to sell 100-400. Not for others.
100-400 is compact only when compared with the new lens. On its own its far from compact and light. For some, a 70-300/70-200f4 could be more suitable, if they don’t shoot wildlife.

I think this lens will pair really nice with the 70-200gm and the 1.4tc, and when I save up this will become my wildlife setup for the foreseeable future,
The 100-400 is still king for its versatility and I know it would be a mistake selling it to fund the 200-600
Getting a very solid lineup from Sony now, only problem is we have no second hand market at reasonable prices yet,
Will be nice to see sigma and tameron give us some of their telephoto lenses, the 500f4 at half the price of the Sony 600f4 has to have a market...Show more →

I've given it more thought and I will be keeping my 100-400 in addition to the 200-600. Here is why. I am currently in South Korea for 3 weeks on vacation. I've gone on a bunch of hikes with both the sony a9 with the 100-400 in one bag and the a7riii with 1-2 lenses in my other bag. If I brought the heavier 200-600, I would not be comfortable. It was hard enough as it was. So for non wildlife oriented trips, I'd still bring the 100-400, but not the 200-600. I travel a lot, so your mileage may vary.

I'd like to see the performance with the 1.4x TC, both full image as well as crops given the questionable vignetting issues that TC's have with the 100-400 GM.
I'm going to order this lens though, I'm still using a Canon 100-400 II + 1.4x TC, although I had to buy an 80D body for good AF, so this lens will allow me to drop the extra body, get back to FF, (with the 1.4x TC) with the same FOV if the performance is acceptable.
I'll be looking, but if anyone sees testing done with the TC's please post links.

Thanks - this is useful. Biggish but not bad at all.
But whoever took it was trying too hard to make a point or not thinking. Put the lens hood on the 100-400 and zoom to 300 or 400 and the difference in length is presumably not going to be much (still a lighter lens much easier to pack though). That is the unreversed hood on the 200-600, right?

The photos show all of the lenses without any lens hoods.

I'm using a collapsible rubber hood on the 500PF. I think I'll look for same on this one.
The collapsible on the PF takes a filter which is nice, B+W
Need to look up the filter thread size on the 200600.

That’s not a hood, if you’re referencing the pic he posted.

Too bad the tc 1.4 is not going to af well with the a7r3. Right now I have.a 560 f8 (with the 1.4tc on the 100-400) that afs well. This is a major consideration for me. Huh... this is a roadblock. This lens is going to require an a9 to get its full potential.
Speaks to how Sony has more work to do with its camera line.
They really need a 42mpx a9 successor.

According to the SEL200600G camera compatibility page focal plane phase detection AF cannot be used for focal lengths with a maximum aperture value of F13 or above with the a9, a7iii, a6300, a6400 and a6500.
So you have a few other options than just the a9 But the a9 will focus the fastest which is clear from all the videos that have been put out so far, along with the DPReview interview with Sony's Yasuyuki Nagata where he says that the lens focus performance will be a totally different experience depending on the camera body being used.

OK...that is a bit more of a beastie lens than I was picturing even after watching a slew of YouTube videos yesterday. I'm going to have to think this through a bit more over the next month before my card is charged in August. I was picturing the 1-4 extended to 400mm to be as long as this but it will actually still be a little shorter...maybe with the 1.4TC on the 1-4 it would be about the same.
My other consideration is that I have my 400DOII which coincidently weighs the exact same as this 200-600 lens. However, once I add the bulky Canon converters and the MC-11 it does become heavier and probably almost as long. And despite how good the AF has been getting it still isn't like shooting my native 100-400. Arrrrggggg.....
What I really need is a good 1200mm lens and I know I have to go over to the other thread and find a spare $11K to get that

I can hear you, Geoff. My preference would be to get beyond 1000mm too, but that 600mm GM looks to be even more expansive than the 400 2.8 and hence is way out of my financial reach. I've started wondering whether I should just get the 200-600 and use that with the a7riii when I need reach, and with the a9 when I need speed.
Do we already know anything about the initial focus acquisition performance of this lens? This was, at least in my book, one of the few weaknesses of the otherwise excellent Nikon 200-500.

"When a Teleconverter (SEL14TC) is mounted, focal plane phase detection AF cannot be used for focal lengths with a maximum aperture value of F9 or above."
That's pretty outrageous that a $3300 (at release) current generation camera can't phase detect AF with a 1.4x and this lens after 325mm (the point where the max aperture drops to f6.3 and thus with the 1,4x tc mounted becomes an f9). I feel like this is seriously "buried" information.

Hi Justin,
I think that the problem is/was the computing power of a 42 MP camera and f9 and slower apertures.
