All of us first "adapters" should get a commission from Sony since we'll be the ones impressing the people waiting on the sidelines And if you believe that's going to happen, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale!

Supposedly at 323mm or so....
That is if you trust Mr. K. Rockwell's chart....probably more reliable than his text where he states it is f/5.6 to 300mm and f/6.3 from 329mm....uhhhmmm, Ken, earth to Ken...what happens from 301-328...is it now an f/1.0 lens?....

Tony sorry I missed your link. Now I know the diameter too and the filter size.
Scott F thanks for that. Makes packing a bit interesting for me.

So what would any of you do (assuming I can get one by Aug 20)? We're headed back to Alaska in 70 days.
Would you take the 100400GM or the 200600G?

I'd originally planned on the D850+500PF and the a9+100400GM as the mainstays but with several smaller primes.

I'm very limited on weight (bitty plane must land on the bitty beach). They say 20 pounds of gears but I already asked and they don't weigh me So small lenses in the pockets.

We've got a month up there so a few more lenses will tag along too but even then weight is an issue (and will be now until daisy's are above me head).

If I take the a9+200600, I'd also take
a7Riii+70300G
Zony 35/2.8
Rokinon 24/2.8
Sony 55/1.8

All thank fits in the Mindshift that can go under the Delta seat.
I could even squeeze in the 24/1.4 and ditch the Rok 24.

Thoughts?
Oh targets are big furry animals, landscapes as they happen, and any bierds we happen to see.

Others may disagree, but for size, weight and packing, particularly for air travel (and as you say a small plane), I would take the 100-400mm GM. The 100-400mm GM is more capable of doing more (landscape, close work, wildlife); the 200-600mm is more wildlife oriented.

I took my 500/4L II IS to Alaska many years ago and it worked well but I wished I had a zoom for wider range. I think the 200-600 G could be ideal, especially if complemented by the 70-300 G.

However, if you want to go lighter there is nothing wrong with leaving the 70-300 G home and bringing the 100-400 GM + 1.4x TC instead.

As far as your other lenses, I would only suggest bringing the 24/1.4 GM if you have it. It's my mostly used travel lens.

I swap the cameras for large lenses.
The a9 gets the 70-300, the a7RIII gets the 200-600. More reach that way with the 42mp sensor.
I'd find a pocket for the 1.4 tc also.

To clarify, the 200-600 w/ a 1.4x tc will NOT pdaf on an A7RIII right?

I would take the A9 and 100-400 for closer fast action and the A6400 and 200-600 for more distant slower action.

Quick question...can you still AF with teleconverters using the A7RIII?

Thanks for any feedback

I believe PDAF still works at f/9 and that's what we get when adding the 1.4x TC to the 200-600 lens. (above 300mm)
6.3 x 1.4 = 8.82

With the 2x TC, it will probably still focus in CDAF. (just like with the 100-400 GM)

Thanks Fred, I thought PDAF stopped being used after F8...so was expecting the 200-600 with 1.4X TC could use PDAF points to AF from roughly 280mm to 452mm, and CDAF points from 452mm to 840mm (assuming the lens itself transitions from F5.6 to F6.3 at around 323mm, based on info reported from Tony Northrup in one of the previous posts in this thread).

Anything's possible, but, if they did, I'm guessing it would be closer to Nikon's $3500 price point.

One feature I liked on the Tamron G2 150-600 was the included Arca Swiss compatible tripod foot. I wish that would trend among the other manufacturers.

The Canadian Sony site says 0.2x MM. There is no way a 600mm lens at that MFD could be 0.66x. All the reviews that have mentioned the MM also say 0.2x.

I think 0.2x is the right MM. At 600mm it would act like a real 333mm lens with the same magnification factor (2400 / (0.2 + (1/(0.2)) + 2).

I've given it more thought, and I might get the 600 f4 in about twonyears. Do lenses like these ever go on sale? I'm guessing unlikely since they still have a ton of backorders for even the 400, but Infigure I'd ask!

Probably not, but you do get about 1.34x more reach with the A7R3, so even sans 1.4x TC you get only a little less reach than using the 200-600 + 1.4x on the A9. My results with the A7RIII + 100-400 + 1.4 were nowhere near as good as with the A9, so I stick more to keeping it at f/5.6. Haven’t tried though since the new fw 3.01 arrived to see whether it’s improved.

Good question. There seems little interest in either a 500mm f5.6 (other than the Nikon 500mm f5.6) or a 600mm f5.6. That last lens would be my favorite, yet literally none of the camera brands make it. Pentax comes closest with the DA560, but that is a very long lens. If you care about feather detail, handholdable, reach and price, then 600mm f5.6 should be something of a sweet spot, and with a 1.4TC you also get a 840mm f8.
It seems though that all camera brands are firmly sticking to exotic inaffordable super tele's on one side, slow consumer zooms on the other side. A 600mm f5.6 with very high IQ, good build and a price tag of 4500,- would be my choice.

Chris
