There are certainly good use cases for owning both these lenses. But I think for my photography...like 98% birds, I would be selling my 100-400GM for the 200-600. Won't sell till I get the 200-600 in my hands but can't see myself justifying holding onto the 1-4 if I'm happy with the AF and IQ of the 2-6. Especially if I can get good results with 1.4TC on the 2-6 then the 1-4 will go.
Hi Geoff,
I don't know if 100mm and minimum focus distances are important to you but,
The minimum focus of the 200-600mm lens is 2.4 m (7.88 ft)
The minimum focus of the 100-400mm GM is 0.98 m (3.22 ft)

I see your point when comparing to Nikon but I don't think Nikon is that much of a threat they do not adapt to Sony worth a hoot, and are not native and require an adapter and AF would suffer and the same applies to the Sigma and Tamron's by the time you factor in the converter and AF performance this lens should have been prices at $2,599 IMO or higher. Not complaining one bit though just sayin.
They could have always lowered the price in six months or if and when Canon or someone had a lens that was comparable I tried both Sigma's sport and contemporary and sent both of them back they were not usable for me. AF and MF was too poor in comparison to my Sony lenses....Show more →

The Sigma 150-600S and 60-600 are close to the Sony price. The internal zooming surely adds a premium over the Tamron, Sigma C and Nikon (only 500mm)...and I'd surely rather have the Sony versus those Sigmas.
My sentence was poorly worded, but I actually think that given the lens feature set, the pricepoint is in line with competitors, assuming the optics hold up.

The 100mm I don't care about. The MFD I do use for some flowers, bees, insects on occasion. I do have the 300PF/TCs for that stuff also. The long end is much more important.
I'm not 100% sold on this lens yet but have my order in and 1.5 months to decide I guess.

I think it makes sense to replace the 100-400 + TC with the 200-600 if you mostly shoot birds. The Holy Grail would be the 600/4 bare or with 1.4x TC when needed but...$$

This announcement has also greatly changed my interest in the 2.0TC for my 100-400. Why bother if you've got the 200-600 and the 1.4TC for 840mm. It's tough to imagine a 1200mm (including the 2.0TC) super slow being of much use unless there's tons of light or for static objects.

Looks like the 100-400 has suddenly become a general purpose lens
Hmm the MTF charts of the 200-600 looks about equal to the 100-400. If that translates into real world performance the more expensive 100-400 could be closer to an obsolete lens .

I think the 200-600 makes more sense at 560mm and longer compared to the 100-400 GM. The 200-600 lens + 1.4x TC gives the light gathering of a f/9 lens. (840/9 vs 560/8)

For all of the people ready to throw their 100-400/TC combo in the trash...isn't the 100-400 still far more packable/hikable? That's one of the things I love about it, I can throw it in my bag and barely notice it from a size/weight perspective.

His keeper rate on that sequence is quite impressive. Mind boggling actually
I seriously doubt those are all critically sharp on the head/eye. I bet a lot of near wing focus hits in that sequence especially filling the frame that much. But no loss of focus to background which is expected on the A9 compared to say a Canon.
None the less, still impressive and good to see this lens is no slouch at driving AF. But side to side flight is relatively easy. Birds coming at you, even on a bit of a tangent are much harder. That is where the adapted glass doesn't keep up in my shooting but the 100-400GM does just fine until you add the 2xTC.

0.2x on DPReview. That makes sense. 0.28x with 1.4TC, 0.4x with 2xTC.
Compared to 0.14x for the 600/4GM, 0.196x with 1.4TC, 0.28x with 2xTC
Compared to 0.35x for the 100-400GM which would be 0.49x with the 1.4TC at 560. 0.7x with the 2xTC.
The very first shots with newly acquired A9, with 100-400 GM.
1/800 f/5.6, ISO 4000, +1ev with +40 shadows recovery in PP. No noise reduction applied (I know I could apply some, but I wanted to see how it fares with noise at high ISO).
AF-C Zone with tracking, Continuos shooting: Mid.
Any advice is welcome
I hope 200-600 can manage such shots as this without TC or with 1.4x at least...

Hi Fred,
But, for the purpose of packing and travel, particularly when space and weight are an issue by air, the 100-400mm GM has a distinct advantage.
I am going to keep my 100-400mm GM and depending upon the findings by others and if I can afford it, purchase the 200-600mm in the future.
I suspect that we will be seeing the 400mm GM, 600mm GM, 200-600mm G, and quite likely the 100-400mm GM lenses at the Tokyo Olympics.
Rich
Along with the 135 f/1.8 for some sports where a shorter focal length makes sense and I suspect a GM 300 f/2.8 as well.

It can get that type of shot sometimes. Easier with the dark bird against sky. It looks like it is tracking fine when you are shooting with 100-400/2x but the actual results of critical focus back on the computer take a noticeable hit compared to the bare lens or lens with 1.4. I do have flight shots with the 2x but it is more cherry picking out of a lot of shots...just like shooting Canon
I would expect bare lens 200-600 will have no issues...with 1.4TC?...not sure...anyone's guess...

So, buying TC2x to use with 100-400 on A9 should be a nice solution for everything, accepting that with fast-moving animals/birds you have to resort to fast burst à-la-sprayandpray?

It’s ordered, from The Camera Store in Calgary. Due early August. Don’t tell the wife that the 400GM is so good with converters that I am not sure I need it.

I still think that I want the A7000/Mini A9 (particularly A7r size) more that the new 200-600mm lens. I would like this option for the purpose of a smaller lighter package to supplement my A7rIII. The 100-400mm GM with the A7000 would yield the equivalent to a 600mm f5.6 alone or 840mm f8 with the 1.4X TC. But, this is me. Of course the new 200-600mm with the new camera would also prove to be quite effective.
