One of the reviewers said the zooming from 200-600 is only about a 70 degree turn, I like that a lot.

The sample gallery on Dpreview for the 200-600mm is nothing great. If you're trying to appeal to wildlife photographers, why not show wildlife - and closeup? Birds in particular will really give us a sense of the ability/sharpness of this lens. The same goes for the Sony UK page. I know it's early, but we need to see really great photos done by a variety of experienced photographers to judge the quality of this lens. I'm not willing to plunk down $13k for a hobby, but the $2000 for the 200-600mm is doable if the quality is there.

I think that’s fantastic! Happy to hear and welcome to this direction. There’s loads of great optical options. I love my a7r3 and hope to pick up an a9 when the mk2 comes out.

It's pulling me in Sony's direction. I'm in the process of selling my Nikon gear and picked up a Canon 600mm f/4 II to adapt on the A7r III so I can get a feel for Sony bodies. The 200-600 may place me firmly in the Sony camp.

The only surprise I see is that the 600/4 is not a development announcement. B&H says they expect to start deliveries Aug 2. Good news, it's only $13K.

Im really pleased with this lens announcement. The roller coaster with SAR was certainly interesting...

We got internal zoom, tc compatibility, narrow zoom throw, 11 blade aperture, 7.88 ft mfd, removable tripod mount like the 100-400 (which I love).

Negatives are the 95mm filter and the doreview report that at least one lens’ tripod ring didn’t lock down taut.

I've been looking at these pictures closely. Assuming this is basically the final form (minus the front element and hood), I believe most of what we need to know about this lens is already depicted in the shape and design of what is there and what we can infer is not there.

Re: Is this an internally or externally zooming lens?

I believe this is an internally zooming lens. I know others have disagreed with me. And I could still easily be wrong; I'll get to that. But here's my case for internal.

I made a new thread for the 600 f/4 as I'm sure this thread will take off and have a lot more interest. The 600/4 thread will hopefully have some users...not sure if I'll be one of them...probably not till Sony release a new camera with higher pixel density combined with A9 type performance.

I’m kind of torn on which direction to go with my wildlife shooting. I really like the internal zoom on the 200-600 and the weight is good for what it is. The problem is that I shoot with a D500 and 200-500 for wildlife currently, which I feel will do a better job tracking then my a 7R3. I had already decided that if the lens came in at 4 pounds I would pre-order, but at the actual weight it might not be enough of a difference to sway me. I guess I’ll wait for real world images before making my mind as well as field reports. I can’t add the a9 Right now and I prefer my a7R3 for my general purpose camera.

Basically SAR knew nothing about this lens. Without that random stolen casing I doubt we'd have had much speculation until today. They must have not had any sources actually at the NYC event as they wouldn't have called the 600/4 a development announcement.

I'd like to see some reviews of the lens (200-600) on some of the lesser bodies.
The Northrup's said they had some hunting with the a7RIII.

The a6400 could shine with this.

I'm glad I was wrong with just about every guess I made about this lens.

I’m gonna preorder the 200-600. Be the first lens I’ve ever preordered! It is big. Bigger than I hoped for, but it checks off a lot of boxes. Now I have to decide what to do with the 100-400. It’s tiny and quite versatile. I wonder if we’re gonna see a flood of 100-400s hit the market.

So try waiting for reputable reviews instead of judging on info that comes out on day one.

It's a tough call if one already has the excellent 100-400GM + 1.4TC.
