A zoo?
That would probably cover a good percentage of use-cases. I hope there are animals involved, anyway. I want to hear how animal eye-AF works out with it.

Without ability to use a tc, the lens is kind of pointless.
I don't know. After using the Sigma and Tamron TC's on the Sport and GII, I'd say that's pointless. Both those lenses gave more detail in crops than they did with their native extenders in getting to 800mm.

There's always the a6400.
I mean compared to the 100-400 with tc. Nearly the same reach and lighter. What would be the point of the 200-600 without tc capability?

Since it's a G-class, I'm assuming weight and optical quality will be the differentiators, and price will be the trade-off.

The GM with the TC knocks down the optical quality anyway, so just the weight and price then. If it doesn't allow tcs, then it will be massively disappointing news. Even the cheap Nikon 200-500 allows tcs. Really wish they'd announce a top of the line apsc camera at least.

Yes I'd much rather see a super high end APS-C camera or a A9R type camera. I'd also rather see a 500 or 600 f/4 lens. But in reality I need both a new camera and a new super prime to get me to invest any more into Sony. I love the A9 but can't get enough reach for a lot of my tiny bird subjects. 800mm on 24MP FF isn't enough for me. D850 gets me my reach right now.

I'm stuck with only lightweight. I'd never be able to handhold those primes unless they had a 500 pf like. So, i keep my G9 and 100-400 on a peak clip on my belt for 200-800 reach while holding the 100-400 with or without tc for birds in flight.

D850 and 500PF is pretty much what I use most of the time these days. Sometimes with 1.4TC on it if not chasing fast BIF. I think it is the best gear out there right now. I'm also getting tired of big heavy lenses but will probably get one more in my lifetime before I only use smaller ones.

Hi Geof,
How about a 36 MP A7000/Mini A9 with IBIS the size of an A7r that can shoot 15 or so FPS and works well with the 100-400mm GM alone and with the 1.4X TC?

I'm surprised that Tamron or Sigma hasn't come up with a tc that doesn't have the protruding front end like the Sony's.
This lens may make this a reality if Sony's tc's don't work with it.

Yeah, we'll see which is better, but I think it's a mistake to assume that this bare lens will be better than the GM with the 1.4x.

Don't know exactly why the white lens trend started but I believe it is a little safer in America to be slinging around a long white lens than a black lens. So I am thankful that the white lens trend continues.
